Parasites Treatment and Control
Deworming is critically important in the health care program of all horses. Horses should be dewormed a minimum of four times per year or quarterly. There are different deworming medications on the market and an optimal program will take advantage of these different medications by using an alternating schedule. The following would be a good rotation schedule for most horses in good health and condition.
Pain Management
This surgery is considered a measure of last resort. It does not correct navicular disease‚Äîit merely removes the pain. Horses can expect 1-4 years of pain management and it is not considered a permanent fix as the nerves can grow back.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Mid-Rivers Equine Centre offer traditional endoscopy and dynamic endoscopy. A traditional endoscope allows our doctors view the respiratory system with the patient is at rest. Because airway dysfunction may only occur during exercise, we also offer dynamic endoscope. This allows the doctor to record upper airway function while the horse walks, trots, and canters (with or without a rider).

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Your horse’s lameness exam often resembles trying to solve a puzzle. Achieving the goal, in solving the puzzle, and therefore the lameness depends on an accurate diagnosis. Though this sounds elementary, in practice lameness problems can be difficult to pinpoint and can take a significant amount of time and patience. With a detailed history, the exam often begins with trotting on a lead in a straight line and at times on different types of surfaces. We like to see the horse longed in a circle as this places torque on the legs and often makes the lameness stand out more clearly. On occasion, we need to see the horse ridden so it‚Äôs very important to have your tack available at the time of the exam just in case this is needed.
Heart Disease Treatment
The horse is anesthetized and placed on the surgery table, and where we will continually monitor its vital signs with an EKG and a pulse oximeter. An arterial catheter is placed for blood pressure assessment and blood gas sample collection.

Upon completing her internships, Dr. Lanham continued her training in large animal surgery, lameness, and sports medicine through a surgical residency at the University of Missouri. During this time, she researched equine hind limb lameness that culminated in a Masters of Science Degree. Her clinical interests include soft tissue surgery and equine lameness.
