This treatment has been available since 1911. This treatment decreases sensitivity to the things to which the person is allergic. The treatment is a type of vaccination because it increases the person’s resistance to the things causing their allergies.

Another type of prescription medication that can cause problems is the group of drugs called “beta-blockers,” which often are prescribed for high blood pressure, glaucoma, migraine headaches and angina. Beta-blockers can cause airway constriction called bronchospasm, so it is important for asthma patients to consult a physician about the use of these medications.

The allergist will conduct a medical history, including an assessment of your symptoms and a relevant physical exam to look for polyps or changes in the anatomy of the nose (if necessary, a CT scan will be ordered). The allergist may also conduct skin testing (link to skin testing) to determine which triggers are causing nasal swelling. Once the allergist knows the triggers that are causing your chronic symptoms, a treatment plan will be recommended.

Eczema
An allergy is an abnormal sensitivity or exaggerated reaction of the immune system to a substance, which, in the majority of people causes no symptoms at all. The substance that triggers the allergy is known as an allergen. Examples of allergens include plant pollen, pet dander, insect venom, dust, mold, foods and drugs. The body’s immune system makes an antibody which is also a protein, called IgE, in response to being exposed to an allergen. People with allergies, make IgE antibody that is specific for the allergen that they are allergic to, which then in turn can cause allergy symptoms. Common conditions associated with allergies are sneezing, itching, nasal congestion and drainage and are referred to as allergic rhinitis, or more commonly, hay fever. Eye itching and swelling are referred to as allergic conjunctivitis. Asthma, eczema and hives can also be conditions associated with allergies.

Dr. S. Mark Olmstead attended medical school at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He did a general rotating internship at Tulsa Regional Medical Center and internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Allergy/Immunology fellowship was completed at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Olmstead has been in private practice since 1995. He is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in the division of Allergy and Immunology. He has spoken throughout the United States on asthma and allergic rhinitis. He served on the Texas Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008 and served on the Board of Directors for the North Texas Allergy and Asthma Foundation for 10 years. He is passionate about educating the public in how a Board Certified Allergist/Immunologist can make a difference in the lives of allergy patients.
