Established in 1807, the Richmond Police Department is a law enforcement agency. Its operation division has more than 300 officers responsible for patrolling services. The department manages a special investigation division that conducts major case investigations related to narcotics trafficking, prostitution and illegal gambling. The Richmond Police Department also features a public affairs unit that responds to over 200 media inquiries each month. The department additionally offers several intervention and community-based services to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods. Located in Richmond, Va., the department also operates specialized traffic enforcement and aviation units. The Richmond Police Department has more than 750 sworn officers and over 130 civilian staff members.
