Our surgeons treat a full range of benign and malignant gastrointestinal (GI), colorectal, anorectal, esophageal and endocrine diseases. We also perform colonoscopy screenings to prevent the development of colorectal/anorectal cancer. We perform complex cancer surgeries and other technically challenging procedures. Wherever possible, we utilize minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic surgery to minimize post-operative pain and promote faster recovery and return to work.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
All our surgeons are board-certified in General Surgery (American Board of Surgery) and almost all in Colon and Rectal Surgery (American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery). Our colorectal surgeons are experts in the surgical treatment of malignant tumors of the colon, rectum and anus, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, fecal incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic floor dysfunction, ulcerative colitis, as well as less common conditions. All have completed advanced training at leading Centers of Excellence and most have academic appointments and teaching responsibilities at UCSF.

Our surgeons also offer screening colonoscopy and polyp removal, typically for patients 50 years and older every 10 years, with more aggressive protocols for patients with hereditary colon cancer syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).

Vanessa Armet Talbott, MD is a general and colorectal surgeon. Dr. Talbott received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She then completed general surgery residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Oregon Health & Science University.
Robotic Surgery
San Francisco Surgical Medical Group offers minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for a broad range of conditions including gallbladder disease, hernia repair and thyroid and parathyroid conditions. This surgery is performed using a laparoscope, thus the name “laparoscopic surgery”. In the procedure, surgeons typically make several tiny incisions, insert a lighted tube and video camera through the opening, performing the operation using miniaturized surgical instruments. A camera then transmits images of the operative field back to a computer monitor, guiding the surgeons as they manipulate the instruments.
