Dental Care
Routine dental care is essential to your horse’s health. Dental floating will allow your horse to utilize feed more efficiently, become more comfortable in the bit and bridle, and it will limit many diseases that result from poor dentition. We recommend a dental exam once or twice a year depending on the condition of your horse’s mouth.
Vaccination
At Clara A. Mason, D.V.M in Serving West Virginia, we believe that one of the most important aspects of caring for your pet’s health is vaccinating him or her against possible diseases. There are a variety of diseases which affect our pets, and other animals, so proper vaccination is vital to protecting them from many types of illnesses.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Symptoms can include: depression and an altered mental state including aggression, fever, encephalitis and lethargy. Gait abnormalities can include back and neck pain, toe-dragging, ataxia, tremors and recumbency. Your horse may have an unexplained weight loss. Eye problems may include an uveitis and your horse may experience facial paralysis with drooping eye lids and lips. Occasionally, death may occur before the diagnosis is accurately determined.
Nutritional Counseling
Senior horse feeds have now been on the market for more than 20 years and their use has contributed significantly to the extended lifespan horses enjoy today. But the usefulness of senior diets is not limited to horses in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. Senior horse feeds can also be a critical tool in providing nutritional support to horses of all ages that may be affected by a range of medical conditions. High-quality senior horse feeds are highly digestible, and can provide complete and balanced nutrition to horses that could be experiencing health challenges.
Comprehensive Examination
We provide House Calls! Small animals are a welcomed part of the practice. Wellness exams for your dog or cat can be offered within the comfort of your home. If your pet does not like to travel in the car or becomes nervous in the vet clinic setting; let us bring the clinic to you! Unfortunately, we do not offer surgeries for your dog or cat, but we will assist you with choosing an appropriate referral center or vet hospital for your pet’s surgery.

We are happy to service your livestock with similar services that we provide to horses. For ruminant species, we offer radiographs, laboratory and blood work, reproduction services, ultrasound, dehorning, castration, vaccinations, deworming, health certificates, dental exams and hoof trimming (limited to small ruminants). For adult cattle veterinary services, we require that you have a working head-gate and chute. Please call us for prices of our services.
Pain Management
Recently, Dr. Mason was nominated to serve on the AVMA and AAEP Animal Welfare Committees. In addition, she serves on the AAEP sub-committees on Horses and Donkeys of the Bureau of Land Management, Carriage Horse Issues and Equine Welfare and Abuse Issues for the practitioner. In 2018, Dr. Mason attended the AVMA Humane Endings Symposium in Chicago. This symposium addressed many issues associated with euthanasia, pain management, and hospice care in all species of animals.

Clara Mason, DVM in Winfield, WV is an ambulatory veterinary medical and surgical equine and mixed animal practice veterinarian. The practice emphasis is in dentistry, sports medicine, pre-purchase examinations, lameness diagnosis and treatment, wellness care, and preventive medicine. My mission is to increase the health and welfare of your horse, which in turn will increase the enjoyment and success for you; their owners. I do this by providing services such as digital radiography, digital ultrasound, endoscopy, Class 4 Laser therapy, tonometry, allergy testing, thermography and acupuncture. In addition, I will network with specialists at referral centers for the ultimate veterinary care for your animal.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Heaves is a common term used to describe allergic respiratory disease of mature to older horses. It is characterized by increased breathing efforts at rest and chronic coughing. Originally described over 40 years ago by German veterinarian H. Sasse, COPD was his term to describe horses with breathing difficulties similar to humans. Our research now demonstrates that horse COPD is more similar to human asthma conditions. Veterinarians prefer to use the term ROA rather than Heaves or COPD to describe the respiratory condition in horses because RAO implies the reversible nature of the disease once horses are turned out on grass pasture. Equine asthma is used to describe the state of airway hyperresponsiveness following inhalation of dust particle commonly found in barns. Such exposure is usually the result of feeding moldy hay. However, some horses will present identical signs while being on pasture during the summer in response to high levels of grass molds and tree pollen.

Leptospirosis Treatment
We offer Equine Wellness Programs for the health and veterinary care of your horse. All programs are for a one-year term. Full payment is due at the time of the first farm call: check, credit cards, or cash. Should your horse change ownership during the term of the program, we will honor the remainder of the program with the new horse*. Any package can have an additional vaccine such Leptospirosis, Strangles or West Nile Virus booster added for $38 (Botulism $42). Micro Chips are available for $40. Dental floats and exams included in the Wellness packages are performed by Dr. Clara Mason. Any services not utilized during the terms of the program will not be refunded. It is up to the agent/trainer/owner of the horse to schedule the services although we will try to remind you when your horse needs a visit.

Wound and Fracture Care
Standing or recumbant surgery of the horse is performed for castration, biopsy and laceration repair. More complicated procedures may be referred to a specialist.

Veterinary Surgery
Spaying and Neutering
We are a mobile practice. Because spaying and neutering dogs and cats requires gas anesthesia and hospitalization, we do not provide this service. We will assist you in locating a small animal practice for this service if you would like.

Laboratory Services
Skin testing is considered the gold standard by most allergists in the United States. Blood test results do not correlate well to skin test results. In our practice skin testing is the method of choice to diagnose and treat skin and respiratory allergies in the horse.
X-Ray
Digital Radiography-uses x-rays to visualize bone for abnormalities including arthritic changes, fractures, ocd, bone cysts and bone infection. Our unit is capable of providing digital images within 2 seconds. As a mobile practice, we will come to you and do x-rays in the field. We will also give you a copy for your records.
