X-rays
Since every child is unique, the need for dental x-ray imaging varies from child to child. Dental x-rays are recommended only after reviewing your childâ€™s medical and dental histories and performing a clinical examination, and only when they are likely to yield information that a visual inspection cannot. It is CPDAâ€™s mission to practice careful and conservative use of x-ray imaging.

Teeth Cleaning
Routine dental cleanings are equally important for children as for adultsâ€”maybe even more important, as they begin teaching the benefits of good oral hygiene from a young age, which can result in a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Dental Sealants
The typical anatomy of posterior teeth (molars and premolars) includes mountains (cusps) and valleys (fissures) especially on the biting surfaces. The fissures are frequently very deep and prone to retaining bacterial dental plaque which can result in dental caries (cavities). Dental sealants may be recommended for these zones on permanent back teeth. At CPDA, sealants are always applied utilizing dental restorative composites and performed only by the pediatric dentist. We believe that this approach results in superior long term retention and preventive success.
Space Maintainers
Posterior baby teeth (primary molars) are lost and replaced by the permanent successor teeth (premolars) over a several year span typically during ages 9 to 13. The baby molars are important in preserving the space and guiding the emerging permanent teeth into healthy positions. Premature loss of posterior baby teeth may require utilization of a space maintainer to hold the space necessary for arrival of the permanent teeth. The CPDA pediatric and orthodontic dental teams monitor each childâ€™s dental growth and development and will advise on the need and options of space maintenance.

Fillings
Crowns
Preformed metal crowns, also known as Stainless Steel Crowns, are prefabricated metal crown forms that are adapted to individual teeth. Primary (baby) molars (back teeth) and permanent molars may require restorative procedures commonly called â€œcrownsâ€ or â€œcapsâ€ . Bacterial tooth decay (dental caries), developmental defects, or fractured teeth may require treatment to restore teeth with a Stainless Steel Crown. Although most teeth can be restored with tooth colored resin-based composites, sometimes full coverage protection with a Stainless Steel Crown is necessary for strength and to restore form and function of the molar. Stainless Steel Crowns are adapted and placed in one visit. And, when placed on primary molars, the Stainless Steel Crowns are lost by wiggling back and forth just like natural primary molars are lost.
Dental Bonding
Children can sometimes crack or chip their teeth in everyday activities or sports. In other cases, a childâ€™s teeth may be irregularly spaced, misshapen, or decayed. Fortunately, with dental bonding and contouring, teeth can be repaired, re-shaped, and restored, which can brighten a childâ€™s smile and boost his/her self-confidence.

Orthodontics
However, there are instances when earlier intervention is best. The problems which may best be addressed early include narrow upper jaw width, cross-bite (upper teeth aligned inside or behind lower teeth), severe malocclusion and severe crowding, mouth breathing, and sucking habits. Early treatment sometimes can eliminate the need for later full treatment. In other cases it can result in less complicated or quicker second phase of orthodontics.

Braces
Braces are the common term for the fixed attachments dentists use to guide teeth and jaws into optimal harmony. Typically they consist of small stainless steel brackets bonded to each tooth, the orthodontic arch wire and elastomeric ligatures (often colored) which connect the arch wire to each bracket.
