We are happy you have chosen us to help you. At your first appointment, a careful, gentle complete periodontal examination including cancer screening exam will be done. If no current x-rays are available from your general dentist, full mouth x-rays will be taken during this appointment. Your condition will be diagnosed, then all treatment options, including fees, etc. will be discussed with you. The doctor will be in contact with your general dentist to mutually coordinate a treatment plan that best fits your wishes and needs. He will also discuss treatment with implants if it is appropriate to your diagnosis.

X-rays
A consultation with appropriate dental x-rays is necessary to determine if one is a good candidate for implant dentistry. Factors that need to be considered are health of any teeth present, quality and volume of bone in the implant site, and general health of the patient. Diabetics with good regulation of blood glucose could be considered for implants.
Oral Cancer Screening

Crowns
A dental implant is a titanium root-shaped fixture that replaces the root of a tooth. Dental implants may support single or multiple crowns, fixed bridges, or removable teeth with the goal of restoring function and esthetics. The dental implant does not need to be attached to teeth next to the space, so natural teeth would not need crowning just to replace a missing tooth or teeth, as with a conventional fixed bridge.

Periodontal Surgery
SWELLING: Swelling following periodontal surgery is normal and may continue for several days. However, if fever develops, please call. To help control swelling, an icepack should be placed on the cheek for 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off, and then repeated for 3-4 hours. This is for the day of surgery only. Also, ibuprofen (e.g. Advil, Motrin) can be taken to prevent inflammation. 600-800mg (3-4 over-the-counter pills) can be taken 3 times a day, as long as you have no sensitivity to this medication.

Dr. Kim was fascinated by how gum heals after treatments, so she entered and completed periodontal residency at Tufts University. Dr. Kim currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where she enjoys teaching dental students.
