Welcome to Athens City Schools The Athens City School System has a long history and reputation for academic excellence. Student test scores are above the state average and always compare well to national averages. Dedicated teachers and staff combined with involved parents and a supportive community, contribute to the success achieved by our students.The residents of Athens always tirelessly support the school system and the needs and interest of its' students. Each year graduates of Athens High School receive hundreds of scholarships from two and four-year colleges throughout the United States. The highly acclaimed Athens High School Band consistently receives awards in recognition of its outstanding musical and marching performances. The athletic programs within the school system are also second to none. Academic organizations such as the Math and Science Clubs, Vocational Clubs, and Art Clubs participate in numerous competitions throughout the State. Quality, academic achievement, and sportsmanship are woven throughout all school-related activities.Striving to meet the diverse needs of students, local school support teams work with parents and students to provide intervention strategies for students. These teams also make needed referrals for special programming services such as enrichment classes, English as a Second Language, special education, and counseling.The Athens City School System has approximately 3, 150 students. Of this number, 1285 are enrolled in one of the four elementary schools, 500 are enrolled in the intermediate school, 475 are enrolled in the middle school and 890 are enrolled at Athens High School. Employing approximately 222 full-time teachers, Athens City Schools' has an average student teacher ratio of 15 to 1. Teacher salaries in the school system average the third highest in the state of Alabama, thus the students of Athens receive instruction from some of the best-qualified teachers in the State of Alabama.Funded primarily through state and local tax dollars, Athens City School's annual budget is approximately 26.1 million dollars. The State of Alabama provides 15.1 million with local tax dollars providing the balance. Additionally, funds are received each year through various state and federal grants to support specific program activities such as the Third Grade Violin Program, and various technology-related initiatives.past, the Athens City School System is also committed to providing innovative, state-of-the art teaching materials and equipment for students.
