Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a retinal disease that occurs when the macula, an area at the retina at the back of the eye, begins to gradually deteriorate, usually because of age. A partial or total loss of central vision can occur. AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 affecting more than 13 million people. Because it affects the macula, the part of the eye which processes sharp, clear vision so often patients with macular degeneration can lose the ability to read, watch TV, drive, and ability to recognize faces or lose vision entirely. There are treatments available for some types of macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
ICL means Implantable Collamer® Lens and is a state-of-the-art vision correction procedure. The EVO ICL lens is placed inside the eye behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) and helps correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. The EVO ICL lenses are safe, effective, UV protective, and give a phenomenal visual result. You have many vision correction options, and ICLs can give you better vision than LASIK in certain cases. In fact, if you are very nearsighted, this may be the best option for vision correction.
Cataracts
Over fifty percent of people over the age of 60, and quite a few younger than that, suffer from cataracts. Currently there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. As we age the lens can become cloudy from the cataract. Once they form, the only way to see clearly again is to have them removed by replacing the cloudy lens with a clear intraocular lens implant.
Cataract Surgery
In your parents’ or grandparents’ day, cataract surgery was considered risky, required a lengthy hospital stay and was usually postponed for as long as possible. Today, cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes. It is now one of the most common and successful medical procedures performed. In fact, following cataract surgery, many patients experience vision that is actually better than what they had before they developed cataracts.

He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He completed his residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
