Weight ManagementThis spring I will start a ‘Walk With a Doc’ effort to meet patients outside the walls of clinical healthcare. The goal is to use the outdoor environment as a gateway to conversations about health, while participating in a low-impact exercise program. My vision is to share time with patients without the confines of the office environment to walk and talk about managing chronic disease, smoking cessation, or weight loss.”
Pediatric CareWe offer complete medical care for the entire family and have a special interest in pregnancy care and pediatric care.
Primary CareIn 2004, Harvard restructured the third year clerkships to place a cohort of students in outpatient settings for the majority of their curriculum, which allows students to follow “their patients” in all health care settings. (Reference: Ogur B, et al. The Harvard Medical School-Cambridge Integrated Clerkship: An Innovative Model of Clinical Education. Acad Med. 2007; 82:397-404.) The Asheville community is well suited to this type of curriculum because of its robust primary care services and diverse specialty practice settings. The longitudinal integrated curriculum utilizes a smaller number of dedicated teachers and a greater reliance on outpatient teaching. Students have more exposure to experienced practicing physicians and a much greater likelihood of seeing the same patients over an extended period of time and through the continuum of care.

PsychiatryThe current proposed state Senate budget includes an annual appropriation of funds to MAHEC to expand our mission to train healthcare providers for the western part of the state. This initiative has the potential to make a substantial health and economic impact in the region by expanding the UNC Health Sciences Campus in WNC. The plan calls for adding new residency training programs including general surgery, family medicine and psychiatry.
