Comprehensive Examination
Today's modern anesthetics have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at American Veterinary Hospital, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that a fever or other illness won't be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout "Is Anesthesia Safe", by Laura McLain Madsen, DVM, explains this in greater detail.

Parasites Treatment and Control
We review vaccines and preventative measures with every pet owner so you may make an educated decision as to what specific preventative measures are warranted based on your pet’s particular environment and life style. Not all patients require the same vaccines and other preventative medications. We do not offer a “cookie cutter” approach to disease prevention. From vaccines, to intestinal parasites and heartworm prevention, we realize that each individual pet is faced with different risks. As such, Dr. Hendrickson and the staff of American Veterinary Hospital will work to continually help clients assess what preventative measures are warranted for each individual pet.
Pain Management
A. What pain control is used? Surgery hurts! It doesn't matter if the patient is a human, a dog, or a guinea pig. Analgesia is the relief of pain, and in modern anesthetic protocols we strive for pre-emptive analgesia (blocking the pain pathways before the painful procedure starts), and balanced anesthesia (trying to block the pain pathways from as many directions as possible).

Heart Disease Treatment
Anesthesia: We use state-of-the-art equipment to provide for and monitor patients undergoing general anesthesia. We use isoflurane gas anesthesia and we monitor blood pressure, cardiac conduction (ECG), and pulse-oximetry during the anesthetic procedure. Intravenous catheters, IV fluids, and fluid pumps are utilized for most surgical procedures, including spays and dog neuters. These safeguards are vital to ensure the safety of your pet while it is anesthetized. We are extremely successful anesthetizing patients of a variety of ages and believe that the most important factor in determining if your pet should undergo anesthesia is your pet's needs and well being, not your pet's age.
Kidney Disease Treatment
All of our surgical patients receive an IV catheter with IV fluids running during the procedure. Many drugs used for general anesthesia tend to cause blood pressure to decrease. This decrease in blood pressure in young, healthy patients has proven to cause kidney disease years later. Intravenous fluids will combat this decrease in blood pressure. In addition, if there are any adverse reactions under anesthesia, an intravenous catheter allows immediate administration of emergency drugs.

Surgical Services: Our surgical suite gives us the ability to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. American Veterinary Hospital offers all levels of surgery from spays and neuters, to major soft tissue surgery. For more complicated soft tissue, orthopedic, thoracic, and spinal surgeries, referral to a board certified surgeon is available. Spaying and Neutering
Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery. Also a pre-anesthetic blood screen is recommended prior to undergoing anesthesia and surgery.

Laboratory Services
1) Is pre-anesthetic blood work run? All patients, not just the old or sick, should have basic pre-anesthetic blood tests performed checking the blood sugar, kidney values, and red blood cell count. Many animals will require more extensive pre-anesthetic blood work. Even in animals under one year old, blood work will occasionally detect abnormalities that could affect anesthesia.
X-Ray
Diagnostics: Our hospital is equipped to provide for your pets’ complete health care needs. American Veterinary Hospital is equipped with the latest in diagnostic technology. Our diagnostic capabilities include digital radiography, doppler blood pressure measurement, ocular tonometry, and telemedicine.
Dental Radiology
We also offer dental radiology as a part of our comprehensive dental care and treatment. Just as your dentist takes radiographs of your teeth, dental radiology also allows veterinarians the opportunity to look beyond the obvious and better examine teeth and their supporting structures below the gum line exposing hidden, and often undiagnosed, problems.
Microchipping
A HomeAgain microchip is permanent pet ID. The microchip itself has no internal energy source, so it will last the life of your pet. It is read by passing a microchip scanner over the pets shoulder blades. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that provides the power necessary to transmit the microchip's unique ID code and positively identify the pet.

Is trained or willing to receive training in the areas of: gentle pet handling, pet bathing and grooming with gentle care, keep hospital clean and fully disinfected, keeping all laundry clean/disinfected and well-organized, waste disposal, assisting our doctor/s, running lab work, some reception tasks.
