Dental Examination
X-rays
If the first visit is not until age 4 or 5, the child should be able to sit in the dental chair unassisted. An exam, cleaning and fluoride treatment will be conducted. Around age 4 1/2, we will try and take bite-wing x-rays. These are the x-rays that show us how well (or not well) flossing is being completed.

Teeth Cleaning
Fluoride Treatment
If this is their first visit, the goal is to have the child sit in the dental chair alone. However, if needed, the child may lay on his/her caregiver while the caregiver lies down in the dental chair. If behavior is a concern, a knee-to-knee exam may be performed. A cleaning is usually attempted at this visit. If the child does not cooperate with the dental handpiece, the cleaning can be performed with a normal toothbrush. Flossing and a fluoride treatment will also be attempted.
Dental Sealants
The Isolite, which we call the "Squishy Fishy" allows fillings and sealants to be completed in almost half the time - perfect for little ones with limited attention spans! This is a really neat gadget that not only helps Dr. Melissa and her dental team, but your child will enjoy the benefits too! It is a one time used piece of silicone that helps to keep the child's mouth open, retracting the cheek and tongue, suctions spit and also lights up! Your child can breathe, swallow and relax as his or her dental treatment is completed. We recognize that one of the hardest parts of getting a filling for the patient is staying open, and for a filling to be 100% perfect, the mouth has to stay perfectly dry. The Squishy Fishy keeps the mouth dry and the patient can swallow underneath it. Here you can see Katie demonstrating how it looks and feels. We know it looks a little different than anything you may be used to. Trust us. 95% of our patients prefer the squishy fishy over the alternative (using dozens of cotton rolls, using suctions, holding the tongue, cheeks and lips back with hard metal retractors). It also allows us to complete the filling twice as fast! What used to take us 30 minutes now takes only 15!

Crowns
Find the tooth. DO NOT WASH THE TOOTH! HANDLE IT BY THE CROWN ONLY, NOT THE ROOT. Gently remove any visible dirt (some dirt on the tooth is okay) and try and put the tooth back into the tooth socket. You may have to push hard! If you vigorously wash the dirt off or touch the root, damage will occur to the fibers that are needed to keep the tooth alive once put back into the socket.

Root Canal Treatment
This tooth may require a root canal either in a few days, a few weeks, or even a few years. Dr. Melissa can discuss with you the future of the tooth.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
True, baby teeth are lost, but they have a very important job. Not only do they help with speech and eating, they help facilitate the healthy development of the adult teeth underneath. Premature loss of these primary or baby teeth can lead to developmental anomalies with the adult teeth or can lead to spacing issues, especially severe crowding. The premature loss of just one baby tooth can cause orthodontic and oral surgery concerns in the teenage years. In addition, if not treated, cavities in baby teeth can quickly develop into toothaches or even more serious infections. These toothaches can be very painful to your child and can cause multiple other health concerns.
Jaw Surgery
Goals for stopping the pacifier/thumb habits are around age 3. Stopping the pacifier around 12 months of age is easier to do, as the child is less attached to it. Thumb habits can be harder to break. If stopped by age 3, the chance of facial/jaw malformations is minimal. If it continues, orthodontics is almost always needed to correct the ‘bite’ and sometimes jaw surgery is needed.

Orthodontics
Braces
The American Academy of Orthodontists recommends a child see an orthodontist around age 7, or when all four 6-year molars have erupted. He or she may not put braces on at this age, but plans can be made for how and when orthodontic treatment may begin. Some situations where orthodontic therapy may be initiated at this age are severe malocclusions (severe bite issues) severe crowding, or loss of space due to early loss of primary (baby) teeth.
