Dr. Patel graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological & Medical Sciences from the University of Florida. Subsequently, Dr. Patel completed medical school at the University of Florida and went on to Baylor College of Medicine at the Cullen Eye Institute for Ophthalmology residency. Fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Surgery was completed at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. Dr. Patel is Board Certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Intravitreal injections are especially effective in treating wet age-related macular degeneration, which, although less common than the dry form, accounts for more than 90% of blindness caused by the disease.
Cataracts
Ultrasonography is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses sound waves to capture images of the inside and back of the eye. It is often used in patients with dense cataracts, severe bleeding in the eye, or clouding of the vitreous gel which prevents your doctor from adequately seeing into the eye. This procedure can also help detect retinal detachments and tumors in the back of the eye when they cannot normally be viewed. The results of ultrasonography can be used to plan a course of treatment and prevent permanent vision loss from these serious conditions.
Cataract Surgery
Although this procedure is considered safe, there are certain risks associated with any surgical procedure. Some of these risks include retinal tears or detachment, fluid buildup, growth of new blood vessels, infection and further bleeding into the vitreous gel. Cataract formation is often accelerated in patients that have not previously had cataract surgery.

Retinal laser photocoagulation is a minimally invasive procedure used to seal or destroy leaking blood vessels in the retina that lead to serious retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and macular edema. This procedure can also seal retinal tears and destroy abnormal tissue found in the back of the eye.

Ultrasound
This exam uses the same technology as any other type of ultrasound procedure, including an obstetrical ultrasound used to examine a baby still in the womb. During the procedure, sound waves are beamed into the eye and reflected back to produce an image that your doctor can use to evaluate the state of the retina and other ocular structures. No anesthesia is needed for this procedure, and it can be performed easily in your doctor’s office. Ultrasonography is painless, non-invasive and safe for all patients and does not involve any exposure to radiation.
