Ovarian Cancer
In some families cancer is more prevalent than others. Determining if cancer is related to an inherited gene mutation is important, as the cancer risks in hereditary cancer families are much higher than the general population. The vast majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer are due to an alteration or mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. These genes are human genes known as tumor suppressors. If they are destroyed or damaged – mutations are formed – cancer risk is increased. Not all gene mutations are harmful. These mutations can be inherited from either your mother or father.
Cancer Care
We may ask our patients to participate in a clinical trial but the decision is completely the patient’s decision to make. One benefit to taking part in a clinical study, is that patients who participate receive the most current cancer care according to a very specific treatment plan.

Ultrasound
Many women visit the surgeons at Breast Care Specialists after receiving an abnormal mammogram or breast ultrasound. We ask patients to bring the film to their first appointment. If this step has not been completed before your appointment, we may request a mammogram to help us characterize the lesion. Your first visit to us may also include an ultrasound completed in our office.

Dr. Cusick and Dr. Beck have a collaborative relationship with a team of experts in diagnostic radiology, pathology, oncology, and plastic surgery who provide patients with the best, most comprehensive care and communication. This approach allows patients to often have imaging and office visits in a coordinated, seamless fashion with the goal of a quicker road to diagnosis and treatment.
Mammography
A special mammography machine is used to help guide instruments to the site of the abnormal growth. The surgeons will then use a large hollow needle to remove a sample of breast tissue. Typically three to five samples are taken. This biopsy procedure is preferred over open surgical biopsy for those patients who are a candidate.
Chemotherapy
Inserted in your upper chest wall (the space between your collarbone and your breast) to make chemotherapy easier and more comfortable for you. This is a same-day procedure that is performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia. When chemotherapy is over, the port can be removed in a same-day office procedure. ( read more )
Radiation Therapy
Patients typically have daily doses of radiation therapy for several weeks after lumpectomy surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.

As you recover from breast surgery, your doctor will tell you when it is safe to begin exercising. Your goal will be to regain normal range of motion and use of your arm. For your safety, use this handout only as directed by your doctor or physical therapist. (read more)

Cyst
Lesions
This procedure involves complete removal of a lesion through an open surgical incision performed in an operating room with general or local anesthesia with sedation. For lesions that are not palpable and seen only on imaging, a wire marker may be positioned at the abnormality by a radiologist to mark the area to be removed during surgery. The incision is then closed with stitches. Most patients recover quickly from this surgery with minimal cosmetic changes.
