Pediatric Care
As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a physician. When I was about eleven years old, I began working for my great-aunt, who had a very busy pediatrics practice in New Orleans. During the summers, I would follow her around as she attended to her patients. I would weigh and measure them and take their temperatures. As time progressed, I prepared injections, performed “finger stick” hemoglobin and hemoccult determinations, and actually administered injections. It was an amazing experience. Not only did I learn some of the technical aspects of patient care, but I saw the dedication and compassion my aunt had for every single patient and parent, regardless of their race or socio-economic status.
Male Infertility
For conception to occur, men need to have enough healthy sperm to travel from their reproductive organs to their partner’s egg (oocyte). When sperm production or movement is hindered, male infertility becomes a factor.

I was always a “straight A” student and I loved the sciences. Following four exciting years at the University of Texas at Austin, I was accepted into University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, one of the most progressive and advanced schools in the country, leading in research and academics. I was particularly drawn to OB-Gyn because of the miracle of the reproductive process, and the excellent professors and role models in the school. I knew from my first year in medical school that I wanted to become a reproductive endocrinologist. It offered a blend of medicine and surgery, with the added benefit of helping couples start a family...the greatest gift.
Female Infertility
Low ovarian reserve is a common cause of female infertility when women attempt pregnancy in their late 30s and early 40s, but it occasionally happens to much younger women.

Dr. Blotner completed his undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. His extensive postgraduate training included a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, followed by a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Michael Reese Hospital and the University of Chicago.

A: While adoption is an option for many couples, the use of an egg donor provides the opportunity for the male partner to contribute to the genetics of the offspring. The recipient is also able to experience pregnancy and childbirth and bond with her child. The chance of conceiving through donor eggs is approximately 50-60% per transfer, as opposed to less than 5% using her own eggs.

Ultrasound
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): During IVF, the doctor uses medications to stimulate the prospective mother’s ovaries so she develops multiple eggs. We remove those eggs by ultrasound-guided needle aspiration. We give the patient anesthesia for the procedure, which usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes. The laboratory combines the sperm from the prospective father or sperm donor. After the embryos develop and are analyzed, the doctor transfers one or two viable embryos to the mother in a procedure called an embryo transfer.
Radiology
This test will be performed at a radiology center on days 7-11 of your menstrual cycle once bleeding has stopped but before ovulation.

Chemotherapy
Women diagnosed with cancer who have not yet begun chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Being diagnosed with cancer is a life-changing event. It does not have to mean the end of fertility.

Vasectomy
With or without ICSI. Depending on the cause, we may refer patients to a urologist for surgery to correct specific anatomical problems or to reverse a vasectomy.
Laparoscopy
After performing a video laparoscopy with CO2 Laser, we attempted several months of ovulation induction with intrauterine insemination. We eventually recommended IVF. The success rates were were not as good then, but she conceived twins on her third attempt at IVF.
