Preventive Care

Dental Care
Next any necessary dental extractions or surgical procedures will be performed. Before this step, we attempt to contact the pet’s owner for approval of any procedures other than simple or complex extractions. If no contact is made, no further procedures will be performed at that time and we will arrange for any additional treatments at a future date.
Vaccination
Vaccinating your pets against disease is one of the most important aspects of pet health care. Proper vaccination can spare your pets from such potentially deadly diseases as rabies, distemper and feline leukemia. Vaccinations must be re-administered periodically to protect your pets from diseases and keep them healthy for a lifetime.

Comprehensive Examination
If you are taking a pet to another country (permanently or for a visit), contact that country’s consulate or embassy for information about any requirements that you must meet. Many countries require your pet to have an International Health Certificate (APHIS FORM 7001 – “United States Interstate & International Certificate of Health Examination for Small Animals”) to be completed by the APHIS accredited veterinarian who certifies animal health status, conducts tests, and records test results for the individual animals being exported.

Usually referred to as feline distemper, is a virus that runs rampant in the feline community. Even if you raise your cat in total isolation, it is all but impossible to prevent exposure to this deadly virus. Once tested, our doctors recommend your feline companion be vaccinated every year as a booster to maintain immunization.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Is an important, but often times overlooked, part of your pet’s regular health program. Some potentially serious health problems can start with a minor tooth or gum problem. When left unclean for long periods, plaque accumulates on teeth, developing into mineralized tartar (dental calculus). This tartar harbors bacteria, which eventually results in infection of the gums and underlying bone (periodontal disease). The bacteria grow on neglected, irritated gums and can be carried through the bloodstream, causing life-threatening infections in other parts of the body including the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Veterinary Surgery
We provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures through the use of external laboratories. We also work closely with local practices when special diagnostic procedures are required. The facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, in-hospital pet surgery suite, in-house x-ray capabilities, and a closely supervised hospitalization area.
Laser Surgery
Declawing
This operation may be considered for certain individuals who live indoors. The operation is done under general anesthesia and narcotics are used to control post operative pain. It does not involve a hardship and a cat can learn how to get along well without claws. Declawing is best done when a kitten is three months of age or older when it can be carried out at the same time as the neuter and spay. Young cats seem to learn to cope without their claws more quickly than do adults. In most cases only the front claws should be removed. The hind feet are not used for scratching furniture. Leaving the back claws still afford the cat some protection.
Spaying and Neutering
Many people believe that spaying or neutering your pet is only to keep them from reproducing, but this is only one of the many benefits of the procedure.

Laboratory Services
Our on-site laboratory allows us to run a large number of blood tests in-house for cases that require rapid results. It gives the doctor critical information to treat any pet. We are able to perform pre-surgical blood work on the day of surgery, which gives us accurate, up-to-the-minute information. A large, off-site veterinary laboratory is used for routine work-ups and a wide variety of more exotic or comprehensive tests. Results are usually returned within 24 hours.
