Overall

Dr. Magley and her staff are wonderful. Very professional and caring in all that they do. I had to have my wonderful old dog, my best friend, put to sleep last month. Dr. Magley came to my home and was so loving and gentle with me and with Nikki. She listened to my wishes and concerns and did everything possible to make it as easy for both of us as she could. I will always take my pets to this hospital for their medical care.

Vaccination
Initially, a dog should receive two subcutaneous doses about 30 days apart. Dogs over 100 lbs or under 25 lbs may benefit from a three dose initial series. It is best to give vaccination boosters about 30 days before beginning of exposure to rattlesnakes. Protection peaks about 30 to 45 days after boosters and lasts about six months.
Nutritional Counseling
Clinical signs of Leptospirosis infection include fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, and jaundice. By the time your dog starts showing these signs, it is very difficult and expensive to treat.
Comprehensive Examination
Early preventive measures, such as at-home care and in-clinic teeth cleanings will help to reduce the frequency and severity of dental disease later in life. At our hospital, we will perform a comprehensive examination of your pet’s teeth and gums. Just like when you visit your dentist, we use special tools to remove tartar from below the gum line and smooth the surface of each tooth to prevent tartar buildup.

Pain Management
Adverse events are reported in far fewer than one percent of all vaccinated dogs. Most of these side effects are mild and need no veterinary care. Injection site lumps can be treated with hot moist compresses, antibiotics, and pain relief medication if necessary. Systemic reactions (typically flu like symptoms) are reported in fewer than one in 3,000 vaccinates and usually self-resolve in two to three days.

There are times, however, when I do recommend the cold turkey approach. In cases of gastroenteritis, heart failure, kidney disease, some type of bladder stones, canine cognitive dysfunction or food allergies, I will use a prescription diet as I would a medicine because I want the benefits to kick in ASAP. If we have reason to be particularly concerned about a dog developing gastrointestinal distress, I might recommend a slower approach or add a probiotic or other medication into the mix, but I’ve rarely had to do so.

On the other hand, if your dog is a picky eater or if you are dealing with a chronic condition like obesity or osteoarthritis, where delaying full implementation of the new diet by a couple of days won’t do any harm, mixing the old and new foods together for a few days can maximize the chances that your dog will be receptive to the change.

If your pet has bad breath, it may mean there is a problem with their teeth and gums. This can also contribute to more severe medical conditions. If dental issues are left untreated, you may put your pet at risk for problems in their mouth (periodontitis) or with internal organs (heart disease). The challenge most pet owners face is that even if their pet’s breath smells fine, some dental issues are hard to spot.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Leptospirosis is an infectious zoonotic disease that causes serious illness in dogs, other animals, and people throughout the US. This disease is caused by bacteria called leptospires that live in water or warm, wet soil. Leptospirosis causes a variety of flu-like symptoms, but more than 80% of dogs diagnosed develop serious, short-term kidney problems. Yet dogs that do recover may still be at risk for chronic kidney failure or become carriers of the disease, spreading the bacteria during urination.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats, affecting 78% of dogs and 68% of cats over the age of three. Although most dogs and cats will develop some sort of dental disease, small dog breeds, such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Dachshunds, Yorkies and Toy Poodles, are more prone to developing periodontal disease than larger breeds.

Laboratory Services
Once inside the body, the leptospires travel to several different organs including the liver, kidneys, spleen, eyes, reproductive tract and central nervous system. The most affected organs are the kidneys causing failure which can be fatal. Common clinical signs in dogs include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, increased thirst and vomiting. Less common signs include diarrhea and bleeding (due to loss of platelets to help with clotting). None of these signs point directly to a diagnosis of leptospirosis, so testing is needed including baseline lab work (serum chemistry, CBC, urinalysis). If the kidney values are elevated with supporting evidence of failure in the urine coupled with elevated liver values, further testing for leptospirosis is needed. Several different special labs have a direct blood test for the most common serovars of leptospirosis.
