Psoriasis can be found on any part of the body, but the most common areas affected by psoriasis are the elbows, knees, lower back, face, palms, soles of feet and scalp. Saline breast implants are filled with sterilized salt water, and can be filled with various amounts of saline to fine-tune the firmness, shape and feel of the breast. If the implant ever leaks, the saline liquid will be absorbed by the body and expelled naturally. Silicone breast implants are filled with a silicone gel that better mimics the feel and movement of natural breast tissue. These implants are pre-made and are larger than a saline implant, requiring a larger incision. If a silicone breast implant leaks, the gel may leak into the implant cavity; since this may not be noticeable, a yearly MRI is recommended to assess the condition and integrity of the implant. Our plastic surgeon will work with you to determine which type of breast implant is best for you.

Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is another treatment option for hyperhidrosis that involves delivery an electrical current to the area of skin affected by hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately, iontophoresis is not suitable for all areas of the body and cannot be performed on the armpits.
Radiation Therapy
Visible facial veins include: spider veins, telangiectasias, spider angiomas, and benign vascular lesions. Facial veins are dilated blood vessels. These veins are often located on the forehead, nose, cheeks, eyelids, neck, and upper chest. Visible facial veins are associated with sun exposure, aging, liver disease, steroid use, and radiation therapy. They may be prevented by the use of sunscreen. The best treatment for small visible veins is laser treatment. Lasers focus high energy light to be absorbed by the blood within the affected area. This light destroys the blood vessel, gradually restoring the skin’s natural appearance. Topical anesthesia or ice may be applied to vessel prior to laser treatment for maximum comfort. Lasers are safe, producing gradual results. Large veins may require multiple treatments for improvement, not full repair. Small veins require a single treatment for repair. Laser treatment has very few side effects. Temporary discoloration of the affected skin may result from treatments. This discoloration can last anywhere from 5-14 days depending on the location, size, and type of vein being treated. Blistering, crusting, or redness of the skin may also occur but clear within a few days. The use of sunscreen on the treated area is recommended for optimum results.

Laser Resurfacing
Recovery time depends on the laser used and varies for every patient. For CO2 laser resurfacing the general recovery time is up to two weeks while recovery from a procedure with the Erbium laser is generally one full week. It’s possible that the skin may remain red or pink for up to several months after laser skin resurfacing. After laser skin resurfacing, the skin becomes very sensitive to sunlight and it is imperative that patients use a high quality sunscreen liberally and daily. Eczema is a general term used to describe skin inflammation or “dermatitis.” Eczema is not contagious, but is believed to have a genetic component. Other products that our dermatologists may prescribe include tretinoin and corticosteroids which similarly act to lighten skin. Other topical medicines that are sometimes prescribed are azelaic acid and kojic acid that assist in lightening Melasma.If the Melasma does not respond to these medications, our dermatologists may recommend a procedure such as a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, and dermabrasion. The Fraxel laser is an alternative tool that is now used to combat Melasma. The Fraxel laser has the ability to penetrate deep into the skin and eliminate the skin cells that are producing too much pigment, thus, inhibiting the Melasma. The benefit of the Fraxel laser is that the skin’s outer layers are protected while the deeper layer of skin (dermis) with the pigment producing cells is treated. Patients that elect to have Fraxel laser therapy to treat their Melasma come to our offices periodically until the treatment regimen is complete. As mentioned above, sun avoidance is a must, before, during, and after treatment and the use of a high grade UVA and UVB sun block is of most importance.

There are no specific tests that are used to diagnose eczema; however, our skin doctor may recommend that you undergo allergy testing in order to identify possible irritants or triggers. There is also no cure for eczema. Rather, the condition is one that is managed through a variety of medications, moisturizing routines, and/or lifestyle changes. Our dermatologists may observe how you respond to recommended treatments before giving a final diagnosis of eczema, as response or lack of response to certain medications may provide the doctor with a better idea of the condition.
