Ants
Description: Pavement ants are 1/16- to 1/8-inch long with a dark body and lighter colored legs. They have two small spines on the back portion of the thorax, two nodes in their petioles, and their bodies are covered with stiff hairs. Pavement ants are easily identified by the narrow, parallel grooves on their heads and thoraxes.
Bed Bugs
After you return to your unit, thoroughly clean the infested rooms as well as others in the residence. Scrub infested surfaces with a stiff brush to dislodge the bedbug eggs and use a powerful vacuum to remove bedbugs from the cracks and crevices. Dismantling the bed frames will expose additional bedbug hiding places. Remove drawers from desks and dressers to inspect and clean all hiding spots.
Cockroaches
Description: German cockroaches are 1/2- to 5/8-inches long when mature, light brown to tan, and have fully developed wings. The pronotum (i.e., shield-like segment behind the head) has two dark parallel bars on it. The adult males are somewhat narrower than the females when viewed from below. The nymphs, 1/8-inch long when they emerge from the egg capsule, are almost uniformly dark except for a light tan area on the back of the second and third segments. As they develop, the light tan area becomes larger until, as mature nymphs, they have two parallel black bars separated by a light tan area. The purse-shaped egg capsule of the German cockroach (i.e., ootheca) is light brown in color, 1/4- to 3/8-inch long, and typically has 15 to 20 eggs per side.
Bees
Description: Carpenter bees are large (1/2-to 1-inch long), robust insects that look like bumble bees. They differ by having a bare, shiny black abdomen compared to bumble bees which have a hairy abdomen with some yellow, markings. Male carpenter bees, identified by the bright yellow spot in the middle of the head, are aggressive but quite harmless since they lack stingers. Females can sting if molested.

Yellow Jackets
Habits: Carpenter bees actually bore holes into wood to create a tunnel in which to raise their young. Carpenter bees are not social insects, i.e., they do not live in nests or colonies like yellow jackets and honey bees. The entry hole is 3/8 to 1/2-inch in diameter and initially about 6-inches long; in subsequent years, however, this maybe extended to more than ten feet. The initial opening' is straight into the wood, then the gallery typically makes an abrupt right angle and follows the grain of the wood and parallel to the outer surface. Entry holes are usually located in well-lit and sheltered areas, such as headers, roof eaves, porch ceilings, fascia boards, decks, doors, and window sills. Soft wood, such as California redwood, cedar, white pine, and poplar is preferred for nest building.
Stink Bugs
Habits: The bed bug hides in cracks and crevices during the day, preferring to rest on wood and paper surfaces instead of stone and plaster. It leaves these harborage areas at night to feed on its host which includes humans, birds, hogs, and family pets. The blood meal requires three to ten minutes and usually goes unnoticed by the victim. After feeding, the bite site may become inflamed and itch severely in sensitive people. Although the bed bug has been associated with over 25 diseases, transmission has not been conclusively proven. Over time, harborage areas become filled with the molted skins, feces, and old egg shells of the resident bed bugs. These areas have a chracteristic "stink bug" smell caused by a secretion emmited by the bed bug.
Stinging Insects
Aphids
The workers excavate the nest, forage for food, and care for the young. Carpenter ants feed on sugar solutions from honey dew-producing insects such as aphids, sweets, and the juices of insects they capture. They do not eat the wood as they excavate their nests. They actively feed at night well after sunset continuing through the early morning hours. Foraging trails may extend up to 300 feet and, upon close inspection, can be seen on the ground as narrow worn paths.

Birds

Rodents
Description: The Norway rat is the largest of the commensal (i.e., living in close association with humans) rodents. The head and body are seven to ten inches long and the tail is an additional six to eight inches. It has a stocky body and weighs seven to 18 ounces. The fur is coarse, shaggy, and brown with some black hairs. The muzzle is blunt, eyes and ears are small, and the tail, which is bi-colored, is shorter than the head and body combined. Norway rat droppings are up to 3/4. inch long with blunt ends.
Mice
Habits: House mice are found throughout the United States. They are good climbers, jump 12 inches high, and can jump down from eight feet. House mice easily squeeze through holes and gaps wider than 1/4-inch. They are very social in their behavior, very inquisitive about things in their environment, and readily explore anything new.
Rats
Habits: Rats are nocturnal. They are shy about new objects and very cautious when things change in their environment and along their established runs. Outdoors, Norway rats prefer to nest in burrows in the soil, e.g., under sidewalks and concrete pads, stream/river banks, railroad track beds, next to buildings, in low ground cover, etc. The burrows typically have one main entry hole and at least one escape hole. The rats easily enter buildings through 1/2-inch and larger gaps. In buildings they prefer to nest in the lower levels of the building, e.g., crawlspace, basement, loading dock and sewers. They prefer foods such as meat, fish, and cereals and require a separate nonfood water source. Their foraging range is 100 to 150 feet from their nest. Rats are associated with various diseases and occasionally bite. Plague is of little concern because it has not occurred in rats in the United States for many years. However, leptospirosis is vectored by rats, and, thus, is a disease of great concern. This disease is acquired by eating food and drinking water which are contaminated with infected rat urine. Rats also cause significant structural damage and product destruction.
