Both of the veterinarians at this clinic are great! Dr. McCarthy cares for my ferrets and is absolutely wonderful. He is extremely knowledgable, caring, and a very nice person.

The village of Voorheesville is thrilled to have Dr Mike McCarthy and Dr Holly Cheever as their local veterinarians. They are wonderful doctors as well as wonderful people. We would never take our three pets anywhere else.

Vaccination
Up-to-date vaccinations play a large part in keeping your pet healthy and free from disease. However, not every pet requires the same series or frequency of vaccines. Our veterinarians tailor a vaccine protocol that is specific to your pet based on his or her lifestyle and American Animal Hospital Association recommendations.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
If a particular case requires unusual or special care, we may refer you to a veterinary specialist. Cases most often referred to specialists are for complicated orthopedic or neurological conditions, advanced cardiac diagnostics, and complicated dermatology and ophthalmology cases.
Behavioral Counseling
Our veterinarians will work closely with you to understand the source of these behavior issues and develop a specific plan to help eliminate your pet's unwanted behavior. Often the behavior problem, such as inappropriate voiding, can be linked to a medical issue (such as cystitis, bladder stones, or kidney disease) and can be treated medically. For other behavior issues, the treatment plan often includes behavior modification and may include medication-assisted training. Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Core vaccines for cats include feline panleukopenia, calicivirus, and rhinotracheitis, also known as herpes virus. The vaccines are combined into one injection, called FVRCP. FVR is feline viral rhinotracheitis, which causes respiratory infections; C is for calicivirus, another upper respiratory infection; and P is for panleukopenia, also known as feline distemper. Rabies vaccine is a core vaccine for cats and a booster injection must be given every third year (after the initial vaccination) by New York state law, even for indoor animals.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Vaccines are useful in preventing canine distemper, parvovirus, bordetella, rabies, lyme disease, leptospirosis, and other diseases in your dog, and feline leukemia, panleukopenia, respiratory viruses, and rabies in cats. Our Albany pet wellness staff can assist you in deciding which preventive measures are necessary for your pet.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Core vaccines for dogs include canine distemper, adenovirus (hepatitis), parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Combined into one injection, the vaccine is called DHPP. When leptospirosis is added, it is called DHPPL. Due to the increased frequency of the disease, bordetella (kennel cough) is included as a core vaccine for dogs. Rabies is also a core vaccine and is a legal requirement for all dogs living in the state of New York.

At home, watch for subtle changes in your pet's body weight, appetite, water intake, urination, and bowel habits, as well as general attitude and activity level. These changes may be signs of medical problems. Lumps and bumps under the skin may seem harmless, but can be cancerous. Ear infections, abscessed teeth, and gum disease are common, painful conditions that may not become obvious until seriously advanced. A comprehensive physical exam is the tool to evaluate your dog's, cat's or other pet's health status and to help you make informed decisions about the care of your special companion.

Due to the long length of the urethra, female dogs are more prone to urinary tract infections than male dogs. Diabetic animals have an increased amount of glucose in the urine, which may promote bacterial growth and cause infection.

We utilize the most current state-of-the-art monitoring technology. During anesthesia, your pet is cared for by a well-trained and experienced veterinary technician using our monitoring system which tracks blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, oxygen level, and displays a running EKG tracing.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Examination of the urine is also important for diagnosing kidney disease. The specific gravity (of the urine) compares the weight of urine to the weight of water, detecting functional problems with the kidneys. The specific gravity indicates how well the animal is concentrating its urine. If the specific gravity is low (approaching that of water), the kidneys may not be eliminating the body's waste products properly into the urine. Instead of eliminating the waste products into the urine, they accumulate in the blood stream and cause problems.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Preventing periodontal disease by keeping your pet's teeth and gums healthy isn't just a job for your veterinarian; it's your job too. While nothing can take the place of regular visits to The Village Animal Clinic for checkups and cleanings, ongoing follow-up oral care at home is just as important in controlling plaque and tartar formation.

Her formal surgical training includes a one-year surgical internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Maitland, FL and a residency in small animal surgery at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey.
