Dr. Bellew earned his Bachelor’s degree from St Francis College and his medical degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed an extensive four year residency in Foot & Ankle Trauma/ Reconstructive surgery at New York Hospital, Queens. In addition to his surgical residency, Dr. Bellew has completed several advanced courses in internal & external fixation, limb deformity correction, foot & ankle arthroscopy; as well as, microsurgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/ Columbia University Medical Center. He is a member of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons as well as American Podiatric Medical Association.
Wound Care
Our Doctors are experts in the management of complicated non healing wounds. They both are fully trained in wound management and employ a full range of treatment options for complex wounds. The patient and their wound are completely evaluated to determine why they are not healing. This includes evaluation of circulation, sensation, infection, edema (swelling), nutrition, medical problems, foot / ankle/ leg deformities that are causing delayed healing of the wound. The doctors employ the most advanced wound care products to heal your wound, including proper antibiotic management and off loading of the wound with casts, orthotics, bracing, shoes, pads, etc).
Ankle Surgery
For patients suffering with chronic ankle pains that have failed to be relieved with non- surgical means may be a candidate for an arthroscopic procedure. This procedure is performed in the hospital or surgery center. The procedure is done through two – three small incisions, at which time a camera is placed into the joint. We are able to explore the entire ankle joint through these small incisions and also repair small cartilage defects and remove inflamed tissue, adhesions or debris inside the ankle. The procedure is diagnostic and therapeutic (meaning that the problem can be directly visualized inside the joint if there was a question as to why the patient is having the pain and also the problem can be addressed/ treated at the same time). After the procedure, the patient will be advised non weight bearing on the ankle for 1-2 weeks depending on the repair required. Once the sutures are removed, full weight bearing is permitted. Most patients have full relief in 6 weeks and can resume sports in 8 weeks depending on the severity of the condition.
Bunion Surgery
Our physicians at the Foot and Ankle Center of NJ are experts in repair of bunion deformities. The procedure is performed in the hospital or surgery center under intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. The procedure takes approximately 40 minutes to perform. Post operatively, you will be discharged to home 1-2 hours after the procedure. The doctor will prescribe both anti-inflammatory and pain medication to be taken post operatively to keep you comfortable. Most patients have little discomfort after the procedure which is sufficiently controlled by the prescribed medications. Our physicians have performed thousands of these procedures. In fact, they lecture and teach their techniques to other colleagues, residents, and students. They use the most advanced techniques for the repair which provides the patient with a superior functional as well as cosmetic result. There are several types of bunion procedures which are selected based on the degree of your condition. Corns
Hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery. People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes. Causes of hammertoe include improperly fitting shoes and muscle imbalance. Treatment for the condition typically involves shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the nail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another. Treatment for fungal toenails includes topical and oral medications, which used together are very effective.
Lesions
Osteochondritis Dessicans are lesions that usually cause pain and stiffness of the ankle joint and affect all age groups. Often, Osteochondritis usually follow a twisting type injury to the ankle. Osteochondritis may cause swelling and ankle pain. When immobilization of the injury doesn't alleviate the problem, surgery is sometimes prescribed. The procedure usually involves removing the loose fragment of cartilage and bone from the ankle joint and placing small drill holes in the defect. The drill holes stimulate new blood vessels to fill the area and help form scar tissue to fill the defect.

Physical Therapy
Tendon Injury Treatment includes: resting the leg, cold compression therapy, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, heel lift and using of a brace or cast to keep the heel and tendon still. Surgery may be needed if the symptoms do not improve.

Some patients suffer from painful and unsteady ankles. This is usually the result of multiple ankle sprain injuries. The patient will relate symptoms of instability or feeling like they are going to sprain the ankle with each step. These conditions are generally amendable to bracing, orthotics, and physical therapy. Surgery is sometimes required to repair and tighten the torn and attenuated ligament band. This is performed through a small and cosmetically conscious incision. The procedure is performed as a same day procedure in the hospital or surgery center. After surgery, patients are casted immobilized for a few weeks and progress weight bearing by the 4th post of week depending on the severity of the condition and type of repair required. Patients may take several months to return to competitive sport activities. Athletes are advised to have the procedure in the early off season.

Shock Wave Therapy is performed in our office under a local anesthetic only. No sedation is required. The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes per heel. There are no incisions. The ESWT procedure uses high powered sound waves to penetrate through the skin to the level of the chronically inflamed tissue. The sound pulses hit the ligament band hundreds of times which trigger the body's natural healing mechanism to repair the damaged ligament.
