Dick's Valley Market

I'm a longtime resident in Valley. Having Dick's in town was ideal for myself and other longtime residents. Sure, the prices are high compared to the chain stores in Omaha, but the convenience made that a small price to pay when you just need to pick up a few things. As the years went by I noticed the employee turnover was very frequent and I always wondered why. The employees were all extremely nice and helpful. I asked around and found out that most of these people had quit because of the horrible way they were treated. I just thought they had found better paying jobs. That is clearly not the case. I witnessed for myself an incident this week that made me sick. The cashier was doing a wonderful job and being extremely helpful. The male owner came up to the front and yelled at her in front of several customers. The reason he was humiliating her like that...there were too many quarters in the register. She calmly explained they were there when she clocked in for work. He proceeded to humiliate her and then stormed off to his office. A woman and her small daughter were in line and the little girl looked at her mom terrified and asked if they didn't have enough money. The mom explained it was not their fault. The cashier was mortified. All this time I thought the rumors going around about the owners being terrible to their employees were just that: rumors. I now know that is not the case. Many people in town have been taking their business elsewhere for years and I will be doing the same. I've passed this story onto people I know in valley who still shop at Dick's and based on their reactions, they are going to be losing a LOT of business. If this store wants to stay open, they need to take the way they treat their employees into account. It's a small town and word gets around fast. And to the poor cashier: if you're reading this, please know you did nothing wrong and handled it with grace. Nobody should talk like that to you under any circumstances.
