Arthroscopy
Athletic trainers are introduced into the operating room the first week of the program. Here they are taught the basics of sterile field and policies of the facilities. Surgical observation is built into the academic schedule and athletic trainers are encouraged to log hours in the OR for a variety of cases. During surgical observation athletic trainers learn: roles of the different healthcare professionals, surgical tools and instruments, setting sterile fields and techniques, surgical anatomy, arthroscopy viewing, surgical techniques, exams under anesthesia, graft prep, wound closure, and post-operative care.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
The orthopedic surgeons at The Steadman Clinic have been named among the top doctors specialized in hip surgery in the country. The clinic takes a holistic approach to treating hip injuries, ranging from minimally invasive surgery techniques such as arthroscopy and morphology to full hip replacements. The less invasive techniques of arthroscopy and morphology are appropriate for injuries that oftentimes go unnoticed and untreated as they do not cause the severe pain that comes when the hip needs to be replaced. Dr. Steadman is well known for his creation of the Microfracture surgical procedure to treat chondral defects in the knee. It is estimated that today worldwide, Microfracture is used to treat more than 500,000 patients a year. Moreover, the technique has been adapted to treat other joints such as the shoulder, hip and ankle. The use of the Microfracture procedure has allowed countless athletes of all levels to stay competitive in their sports, and its benefits can delay, or even eliminate, the need for more radical and invasive procedures such as joint replacement surgery.
Hand Surgery
His current research interests include distal radius fractures and disorders of the distal radioulnar joint. His research has been published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, the Journal of Hand Surgery, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is an active member of the ASSH (American Society for Surgery of the Hand). He works as an upper extremity consultant to the United States Ski & Snowboard Teams, Denver Broncos & USOC. Dr. Viola & his wife live in Vail. He enjoys alpine skiing, biking, and running.

VAIL, Colo. – Robotic and endoscopic spine surgeon Dr. Michael Gallizzi, one of newest additions to The Steadman Clinic’s highly decorated and elite surgical team, performed his 200th robotic surgery on April 4th. It was less than one year ago—April 19, 2022—that Dr. Gallizzi completed his 100th robotic surgery reaching that milestone less than a month after joining the Steadman team, following a very successful practice in the nearby Denver area.
Arthroscopy
The Institute also has a state-of-the-art Surgical Skills Laboratory that provides a complete simulated operating room environment with up to 10 arthroscopy training stations, which is used regularly by the fellows for basic science projects, perfection of arthroscopic surgical techniques, and general dissection. The Center for Outcomes-Based Orthopaedic Research is dedicated to conducting outcomes research and to providing clinical research support to our fellows.
Hip Replacement
Hip replacement is typically performed when a patient has severe pain due to a fracture or arthritis. Depending on the needs of the patient, a hip replacement will involve a single incision a few inches long directly over the hip joint, or a few much smaller incisions which is referred to as a minimally invasive hip replacement.
Knee Replacement
The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body, in addition to being used for most everyday activities, making it very susceptible to injuries. With the femur above the patella and the tibia below, the bones are connected to the leg muscles by tendons and ligaments allowing for movement and stability. Treatment for knee injuries range depending on severity of the injury from non-surgical methods such as injections or physical therapy, to surgical procedures such as knee replacement and reconstruction.

Lesions
Hip Arthroscopy Hip arthroscopy is suited for a wide range of conditions such as symptomatic acetabular labral tears, hip capsule laxity and instability, chondral lesions, osteochondritis dissecans, ligamentum teres injuries, snapping hip syndrome, iliopsoas bursitis, and loose bodies. An arthroscopy procedure allows the doctor to see the hip joint without having to make a large incision. A small camera is inserted into the joint through the incision, as a result the patient typically has less pain and a faster recovery. Although hip arthroscopy has been performed for many years, it is not as widely practiced as knee or shoulder arthroscopy.

Shoulder injuries often occur from overuse, trauma or degeneration. Treatment of shoulder injuries will be determined by the extent of the injury, but oftentimes injuries can be treated through non-surgical methods such as physical therapy and injections to reduce inflammation. If non-surgical methods are not successful or recommended, one of the leading Steadman Clinic surgeons will suggest an individualized surgical plan to treat the injury and alleviate pain.

Frozen shoulder is a term for stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint that gradually develops and worsens over time. The exact cause of a frozen shoulder has not yet been determined although it is more prevalent in patients that have had some form of arm injury in which the shoulder was immobile for a long period of time or a pre-existing disease, such as diabetes. Tennis Elbow
The most common orthopedic injury to the elbow is called lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is often caused by injury to the muscle in the forearm and typically involves extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon. The ECRB tendon stabilizes the wrist when there is little to no bend in the elbow, for example when a tennis racquet is swung, which gives the common name of tennis elbow. The overuse and repetitiveness of this motion results in microtears in the ECRB tendon near the point that it attaches to the outside bump of the humerus, called the lateral epicondyle. These tears cause pain and inflammation in the elbow.

Bunions Problems
Bunions are a very common injury that is often experienced by adults, although women have a much higher rate than men. A bunion is a bony bump that develops on the top of the large toe at the point that it connects to the foot. Bunions are typically caused by the continuous pressure over years of shoes that are too narrow which causes deformity to the toe, although when bunions develop at earlier years in life, heredity may be the cause. Once formed, bunions can also cause pain to the individual while walking or wearing tight shoes. Surgery to reduce the bunion is possible if the pain becomes too much for the patient to complete daily activities.

Foot Neuroma
The cause of Morton's Neuroma is partially unknown, although it a painful condition of a nerve on the bottom on the foot. It can occur from an injury to the sole of the foot, but a specific injury is not always the cause. The pain is felt in the area of the foot between the bone that connects the toe to the foot, in which the nerves in that location are responsible for providing feeling to the toes. Irritation can occur by the ligament above the nerve which then causes pain. Typically Morton’s Neuroma occurs in the third or fourth toes.
