I recently had the transmission in my truck go out (third gear was totally burnt, amongst other things) and I was having anxiety over where to take it to get it serviced. I don't have a "regular" mechanic I like to take my vehicles to, so if any car maintenance needs doing that I can't perform myself, I go the safe route and take it to carx.
NEVER AGAIN!
I took my truck in to carx because the transfer case was leaking transmission fluid. They said they'd order the seal they thought was bad but they never called me back. I took it back in to carx after a few days because it wouldn't shift into third gear anymore. They said to try putting stop-leak directly into the transfer case and if that didn't work, that I'd need to have them put in a new trans. HA!
I immediately took it to the only transmission specialist in McDonough County that I could find on the internet. I'm so glad I did.
Boyd greeted me and Rich put it up on a lift the minute I showed up. The first thing Rich noticed was that the 8 or so bolts that hold the transfer case on were all only about finger tight, allowing the transfer case to shake about with only slight pressure. So already my suspicions are confirmed about carx and their poor diagnostics.
Long story short, Boyd and co are very professional, courteous, and transparent. Transparency is #1 for me when it comes to things like this because, quite simply, I am not a mechanic and I know that if a shop tried to take advantage of my ignorance, they'd get away with it. Boyd was the opposite. He walked me around the shop, told me about the parts in the trans he was replacing and why. He explained how much the parts cost him and gave me plenty of advice on maintenance and the like.
While they were working on my truck they pointed out a few things that were starting to go bad or needed replacing and gave me instructions on how to replace and maintain them myself. I was so happy about their service that I made them a loaf of beer bread. But do you want to know how they really earned their tip?
Ok, so Boyd points out my saggy driver side door. I tell him "Yeah, it's a pain. I gotta slam it closed all the time and it unlatches itself randomly. But it's just the door. There are plenty of other things that my vehicles need that are way more important!"
So he proceeds to tell me about how much money it would cost to fix after the latch and post wear out from slamming the door all the time. He says "go to the auto parts store and get 2 door pins. Shouldn't be any more than fifteen bucks. Bring it in tomorrow and I'll have Rich put em in for free. It'll take twenty minutes."
The truck has been running like a top, my door works like new and I know a lot more about my truck (and cars in general) all thanks to Boyd's Transmission.
Super happy customer. Lengthy review. Beer bread. Five stars. Whammy.
