- General Info
- Survival Training School of California operates a 100% practical skills based program with an emphasis on real world application. We teach the real thing; no gimmicks, no paramilitary slant, no "mystical" techniques and no "sit and suffer" training... in other words: no fluff. We approach our courses as if you're life could be on the line, therefore the training and the focus is much more on information than entertainment (though we like to think it's a lot of fun!). Our training will open your eyes to a whole new way of viewing "wild" places and enjoying nature and its sciences. We offer; formal training, a fully "hands-on" experience, and true independence. We want you to survive.

I took the map and compass course here and I learned exactly what I came to and then some. STSC is a little bit out there (town of Tehachapi), but the instructions they give make it easy to find. Their location- The Village they call it- is stunning. They have massive brush survival shelters, an archery range, a hiking trail, and great views. They should really have more pics up on the site.
After roughly 2.5 hours of what you might call classroom time, we had lunch and hit the field. We were off trail nearly the entire time and Thomas constantly forced us to problem solve. I learned to; triangulate my location, shoot a bearing, plot a route, and more. I can't believe how comfortable they made me with a topographic map in a day. Will return and highly recommend.

First I would like to thank the instructors at STSC for a great class and all your hard work. I've started getting more serious about my hiking, and I want to feel safe hitting the trail and setting up camp alone, so I got the idea to take both a wilderness first aid and a wilderness survival course. I took the survival portion with the guys at STSC. I looked around for a while and really, this was the only survival school in southern california that offered serious training. The website, the philosophy, the news articles, they all stood out for me and after going through their site like a hundred times I booked. My goal was to feel secure on my own and STSC helped make it happen for me. Not only do I feel like I am more ready to handle an emergency, more importantly I feel as though I am more prepared to AVOID one. If you are looking for professional wilderness survival school, if you want to feel more safe on the trail, this is the group for you.

I can't agree with the other reviews more. It's a great way to spend a weekend. The instructors give you all the 1 on 1 time you could ask for and their location is phenomenal- brush huts, cooking fires, and gorgeous mountain views... ahh the village. Now if I could just get my boyfriend to come with me!

I can't say how hesitant I was about selecting a school(there's a lot now), and how happy I was I picked this one. The school's approach combined with the instructors' backgrounds is what got me: I wasn't looking for summer camp I was looking for survival training. I took the weekend critical skills course and I can say this is a very professional school with highly skilled instructors. As soon as you start you realize you are receiving solid training from real experts. Though the focus was on student success (they're really good about individual attention) I still had a lot of fun and made some new friends in the class. I can't wait to go back for more and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for survival training.
