X-rays
Dental x-rays are pictures of the teeth, bones, and soft tissues around them. X-ray pictures can show cavities, damage to the bones supporting the teeth, and other hidden dental structures (such as impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts, or tumors) that cannot be seen during a visual examination.

Teeth Cleaning
A prophylaxis is a routine dental cleaning performed on patients with normal, healthy mouths to maintain health and prevent the initiation of dental diseases. Traditionally, it has also been utilized for the management of mild gingivitis patients who do not have significant calculus (tartar) built up below the gum line.

Crowns

Dental Bonding
Restorative Dentistry
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004, this pulsing laser can distinguish between healthy and diseased gums by color. The infected tissue, which has a darker pigment than healthy tissue and bacteria are “zapped” away by the laser, leaving behind only healthy gum tissue. LANAP then helps connective tissue and bone form between the gums and teeth, according to a study in the December 2007 issue of the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. The laser’s heat also seals the gums with a “thermal blood clot” which creates a physical barrier, blocking any bacteria or tissue that could recreate a gum pocket.

Root Canal Treatment
Permanent solution: For many patients, dentistry is a bit of a downward spiral. Over the years small fillings become larger ones, leading to the need for crowns and possibly root canals. This happens due to some patients’ inability to control cavities. In fact, larger and larger dental restorations and root canals weaken a tooth and make it more susceptible to future problems. Because dental implants do not decay, they can become an ideal solution for tooth replacement for patients with a high incidence of cavities. In these cases, they are a better option than a bridge, even when the adjacent teeth have previous restorations. Though there are no guarantees that an implant will last for the life of a patient, multiple studies show that dental implants have a higher rate of survival long-term than any other restorative treatment. They certainly have the greatest probability of serving its owner for life.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Pocket reduction surgery (also known as gingivectomy, osseous surgery, and flap surgery) is a collective term for a series of several different surgeries aimed at gaining access to the roots of the teeth in order to remove bacteria and tartar (calculus).
Periodontal Surgery
The newest technology available for periodontal patient care, the Nd:YAG Millennium PerioLase®, is now available at our office. Like LASIK surgery for the eyes, this patented and FDA-approved laser therapy allows us to treat periodontal patients with a minimally invasive, breakthrough procedure which, in many cases, eliminates the need for conventional periodontal surgery. The Millennium PerioLase® was developed specifically to treat periodontal disease using LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure).
Deep Cleaning
Scaling and root planing (also referred to as a deep cleaning) is a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth roots to remove bacterial toxins and make it more difficult for plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces. When performed properly, scaling and root planing can reduce gingival inflammation and probing depths, and can shift the bacterial composition living in the pockets from one associated with disease towards one associated with health. It is considered an active treatment for periodontitis and the results of the therapy should be assessed for success at some point after adequate time for healing has been allowed. For those patients who achieve periodontal health following scaling and root planing, ongoing maintenance therapy is necessary to sustain health.

Dentures
By comparison, research demonstrates that the typical tooth supported bridge lasts from 10-15 years and that partials and dentures are functional for approximately 5 years. Insurance statistics indicate that bridges, partials and dentures last 5 years and they generally pay for replacements every 5 years.
Overdentures
No. In fact, it is possible to replace all of the lower teeth with an overdenture that is supported by only 2-4 implants. On the other hand, some dental specialists feel that it is advantageous to replace missing posterior teeth with individual implants to provide additional strength to withstand the forces of chewing for patients who have most of their natural teeth.

Flap Surgery
Pocket reduction surgery, (also known as flap surgery or osseous surgery) is a surgical treatment which can be performed to reduce the pocket size between the teeth and gums. The surgery on the jawbone is another option which serves to eliminate or reduce craters in the jawbone, caused by the periodontal disease process, that further foster the colonization of bacteria. During this process the ability to see and clean the roots of the teeth is greatly enhanced when compared with nonsurgical treatments.
Gum Surgery
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) is an innovative scalpel free, suture-free treatment option for patients with receding gums. This minimally invasive alternative to gum surgery can treat multiple areas of recession or even the entire mouth in a single visit. The PST™ treatment is relatively simple because there are no incisions or stitches involved. Our periodontists use a specially designed needle to make a tiny hole in the gum tissue. Using instruments unique to this procedure the gum tissue is then loosened and guided over the areas with gum recession. Since there is no cutting or stitching, patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms (pain, swelling, and bleeding). Maxillofacial Surgery
He continued his education by completing a one year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery fellowship at the University of Florida College of Dentistry and Shands Hospital in Gainesville. The next year he moved to Jacksonville and completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Florida College of Dentistry – Jacksonville and University Hospital (now Shands Hospital – Jacksonville). Finally, he returned to Gainesville to complete his education by entering a three year Periodontics residency at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.
Osseous Surgery
The FDA-Approved and patented LANAP laser therapy is a pocket reduction protocol that reduces gum pockets caused by bone loss around the teeth By establishing a new attachment (seal) of the gum tissues, the LANAP procedure provides the ideal environment for the regrowth of bone and the ligament attachment to a root surfaces that was diseased before treatment began. This is a minimally invasive periodontal procedure like no other. In most instances, treatment with the Millennium PerioLase® eliminates the need for conventional cut and suture periodontal surgery, also referred to as flap and osseous surgery.
Tooth Extractions
There are two important phases in retaining your alveolar ridge during and after the tooth extraction. Not all extraction techniques are the same, some can be rather destructive of the bone around the roots. Our doctors use the most careful techniques to extract the teeth while preserving as much bone as possible. Second—and key to preventing the collapse of the socket—is the addition of bone replacement material to the extraction socket. After the tooth is extracted, the socket will be packed with a bone replacement material and covered with a small barrier material and/or sutures. Early on, the grafting material will support the tissue surrounding the socket, and in time will be replaced by new alveolar bone. Postoperative recovery following this procedure is usually no more complicated than that following the removal of the tooth without ridge preservation.
Ridge Augmentation
The ridge augmentation procedure is performed after a provisional (temporary) bridge has been placed by your restorative dentist. During the procedure, your doctor will remove the provisional bridge, which allows proper access to the ridge directly underneath the pontic. Then, gum tissue from another area of the mouth, usually the palate, is used as a donor, and is placed in a precisely contoured pouch at the pontic site to “plump up” the ridge contour there. In cases with particularly large defects, other materials may be used instead of, or in conjunction with, the gum graft. When the procedure is complete, your doctor will replace the provisional bridge.
Bone Grafting
To minimize the rapid shrinking of bone, a bone graft can be placed in the socket at the time of tooth removal. This type of bone graft is straightforward and produces little or no discomfort. A ridge preservation bone graft can often prevent the need for major bone grafting later on. Therefore, a ridge preservation bone graft helps to minimize the need for treatment with major bone grafting in the future.

Orthodontics
In the case shown above, before orthodontics was started, the 2 upper front incisors had a space between them with the frenum extending between the teeth. When orthodontics pulled the 2 teeth together, the frenum bunched up.
Invisalign Orthodontics
Our doctors are specially trained in Wilckodontics®, a procedure designed to activate your bone to have teeth move much more quickly during traditional (brackets) and Invisalign® treatment! Many orthodontic issues can be treated in less time, with the assistance of an orthodontist, such as crooked teeth, jaw misalignment, and other types of malocclusions.
Braces
Sometimes a frenum can be attached too close to the teeth on the gums causing either recession or spaces between teeth. The frenectomy procedure involves the removal of the tissue attachment between the teeth. In cases where the two front teeth are apart prior to orthodontic closure, studies have shown that without a frenectomy procedure, there is a 70% incidence of the of the space reopening after the braces are removed. The most common timing is to complete the frenectomy procedure near the completion of the orthodontic treatment.
