Horrible customer service

We found an area rug today that was "perfect" for our bedroom and were so excited to make the purchase. As we drove into town in our car, the sales person assured us that they would hold the rug while we got our truck. We live 20 minutes outside of town and my husband had a work emergency so it was a few hours (maybe 3) before we made it back. The extremely slow sales clerk that checked us out told us it was crucial for us to bring back the receipt for pick up. As we were heading out of the house, I grabbed the receipt along with my screaming 2 year old. Somewhere between the house, the screaming and the truck I dropped the receipt.....which I didn't find out until I made it to the store 20-25 minutes later. The clerk that sold the $400 rug to us was still there, so I thought I could just explain and with my husband's credit card & ID it would be no problem....WRONG. So, needless to say she or the manager on duty would let us leave the store with our rug that we had purchased only a few hours before. And just to make it worse, my son was literaly screaming his head off the entire time we were there. Maybe it would be no big deal to someone who didn't live in town or whose husband didn't work 6 days a week (with our truck) sometimes 12 hour days, but to me it was an enormous hassle! I told the sale clerk and the manager that I wanted to return the rug, it wasn't worth the trouble and they informed me that without the receipt I could only have store credit. I definately don't want store credit now. And food for thought, if they can return it for store credit without the receipt, why couldn't they return it and let us buy it again with the credit so we could take home the rug we purchased?!?
