Lap-band Surgery is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure that is indicated for the morbidly obese patient or the obese patient that has certain associated, or comorbid, medical problems. The surgery involves placing a plastic band around the upper stomach to restrict the amount of food and calories a patient can take in. It has been found to be an effective way to achieve long-term weight loss. Patients find this surgery appealing because the band can be removed if necessary. The surgery is performed laparoscopically through about five small incisions. Most patients who undergo a lap-band will go home the day after surgery.

Bladder Cancer
A Gallbladder polyp is a mass that can grow in the lining of the gall bladder. Most of these polyps are benign, however, once they reach a certain size, or if there are many polyps in the gallbladder, they become a risk for gall bladder cancer. Patients with gallbladder polyps should be evaluated for the need for cholecystectomy (removal of the gall bladder).

Kidney Stones
When the parathyroid glands are hyperactive the blood calcium levels become too high. This is known as hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism can be a cause for kidney stones, weak bones, pancreatitis and even psychiatric problems. The treatment for this disease is the surgical removal of the offending parathyroid gland or glands. Some patients may require calcium supplements after surgery.
Colon Cancer
Colon cancer is cancer of the large bowel. Colon cancer usually requires removal of the diseased segment of colon and removal of the blood vessels and the lymph nodes associated with that segment of bowel. In most cases the bowel can be reconnected at the same time that the diseased segment is removed. This surgery can be performed laparoscopically without compromising the quality of the surgery or the ability to cure the disease.

Upper endoscopy is a long flexible tube equipped with a video camera that is passed through your mouth and throat into the esophagus. Besides directly viewing the condition of the esophagus, the doctor can do a biopsy (take a small sample of tissue). Some patients with severe cases of GERD can develop a condition called Barrett's esophagus. This is a change in the cells of the esophagus due to prolonged exposure to stomach acid. It is considered a pre-cancerous lesion which needs to be followed closely with endoscopy.

There are a variety of thyroid cancers and they vary in how aggressively they behave. A patient with thyroid cancer or a nodule that is suspicious for cancer requires surgery for treatment.

Adrenal incidentaloma is the term used to describe adrenal masses that are found incidentally on CT scan or MRI performed for other reasons. These may be benign or malignant tumors or may be the result of cancer that has spread from another area of the body. Depending on the size and the results of blood tests, these lesions should be closely watched or removed.

Renal cell cancer is cancer of the kidney. There are about 30,000 new cases of renal cell cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Most of these cancers are found inicidentally on CT scan that is performed for other reasons. In some cases theses cancers are discovered because of pain, a mass that is felt or because of blood in the urine. The standard treatment of renal cell cancer is partial nephrectomy (partial removal of the kidney) or radical nephrectomy (complete removal of the kidney). Certain renal cancers require the complete removal of the ureter as well as the kidney. Most nephrectomies are performed laparoscopically. After laparoscopic nephrectomy, most patients leave the hospital in one or two days after the surgery.
Chemotherapy
The only way to cure pancreatic cancer is with surgery. Surgery for pancreatic cancer is indicated when the cancer has not spread beyond the pancreas. A tumor at the tail of the pancreas may require removal of only the pancreatic tail. Tumors of the head of the pancreas require an extensive operation called the Whipple Procedure. A Whipple is also known as a pancreaticoduodenectomy. In a Whipple, the tumor is removed with the head of the pancreas, as well as with part of the stomach, part of the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) the gall bladder and the common bile duct (part of the drainage duct of the liver). After recovery, most patients require some form of chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
Cancer of the esophagus is a disease that is becoming more frequent in Western countries. One reason for the rise in this type of cancer is because of the increase in Barrett's esophagus (changes in the normal lining of the esophagus) in the West. (See the section on GERD). Esophageal cancer was once considered a uniformly deadly disease. Today, advances in surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are greatly improving survival of this disease.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
When can I return to work? Most patients can resume normal activity witin the first two weeks following minimally invasive surgery for hernia repair. However, depending upon the individual's condition, the surgeon may recommend that the patient wait 6 weeks before attempting any strenuous exertion.
Gangrene
An internal hernia occurs when bowel slips into a space or opening within the abdominal cavity. These spaces are usually the result of prior surgery or trauma. An internal hernia can lead to abdominal pain, bloating, obstruction, and sometimes gangrene of the intestine. An internal hernia is an emergency and warrants urgent surgery.

Laparoscopy
Traditional splenectomy requires a long midline or left upper abdominal incision, resulting in substantial pain and discomfort as well as a prolonged recovery period for the patient. Today splenectomy can be performed using laparoscopy. This involves several small incisions through which the surgery is performed. The organ is usually removed through one of these incisions. Patients are able to eat soon after surgery and usually go home within two days of surgery. Return to regular activity is much easier and earlier than with traditional open surgery.

Liposculpture is an out patient cosmetic surgery used to remove areas of excess fat on the body. It is a less invasive form of liposuction that does not require general anesthesia. Many patients undergo this procedure after bariatric surgery to remodel their tissue after weight loss. Recovery is usually only 2 or 3 days.

A mastectomy can be followed by reconstruction of the breast either at the time of the mastectomy or later. There are a number of options in breast reconstruction which include implants or reconstruction with the patients own tissue.

Laparoscopic surgery on the bowel allows for exploration of the abdomen and removal of diseased segments of bowel without making a large and painful incision. Patients recover more quickly and with less pain than with traditional “open” surgery without compromising the ability to treat and cure disease.
