The puppy, Chewy, was purchased and taken to our personal veterinarian the day of purchase. Chewy was treated for what was thought to be "kennel cough". After multiple blood tests, x-rays, and a bronchoscopy conducted by a veterinarian internal medicine specialist, it was determined that Chew had a resistant strain of pneumonia. As of October 25, 2015, he is still on a daily regimen of antibiotics, cough suppressants, and nebulizing treatments. The cost thus far has been around $3,000 and he's only 6 months old.
Bonnie Hickey, the manager/owner, at one point offered to give us store credit to make up for the medical bills. This offer (which was an insult) was rescinded once we reached out on social media for a solution/treatment for our problem. Since then, Ms. Hickey has made derogatory comments about my wife and threatened us with a lawyer.
On October 25, 2015, I sent Ms. Hickey the following email:
Ms. Hickey,
I have waited patiently to see if you would contact me regarding Chewy's health and medical bills. Last night, after giving Chewy his medication for the night and his final nebulizer treatment for the day, that patience ended.
Neither my wife nor I have ever had a negative thing to say about Pets Plus, its staff, or the products. We have always found everyone helpful (especially David) and fairly knowledgeable. Even with all that Chewy has had to endure, we have not made any negative statements - even after the derogatory comments you have made about my wife.
After our last conversation, I examined my wife's social media posts. I'm not sure where your issue lies. She was looking for anyone with the same problem - not with Pets Plus - but with a dog purchased or groomed at Pets Plus. We have been trying to figure out the best course of treatment for Chewy and one way of determining that is to find out if this is an isolated illness or if
there could be a contamination at some point in the supply chain. As a responsible business owner, I'm sure you would want to know the source. As responsible pet owners, we have ensured you were kept informed every step of the way.
Granted, other people who saw my wife's posts had their own comments to make or experiences to share. Trust me, we heard plenty about puppy mills, adopt don't shop, and derogatory personal insults directed at both us and your business. What we were (and are still) looking for is a solution to our puppy's problem and hopefully prevent anyone else from going through the same thing.
I had hoped you would do the responsible thing, stand by your business, and try to figure this out as well. Instead you have sought to blame us for not using your veterinarian, blame our veterinarian for providing treatment that you felt unnecessary (but has kept him alive), and denigrate my wife in your store. Our veterinarian and the specialist at the veterinarian internal medicine have not simply made up his diagnosis. There are over $3,000 in blood work, radiology, and medications to back it up. This is just the beginning. He still requires a Barium x-ray he cannot get until the pneumonia is cleared.
At this point, I can no longer stand by and be patient. I love my puppy and wouldn't trade him for anything. However this does not negate your responsibility and culpability. We were lied to about Chewy's origins - you informed me after the fact that he was from a "hobby breeder" and not a licensed breeder as your website states - then proceeded to insult us by offering store credit. I have decided to take this public (and not on social media) both locally and in Missouri where the Hunte Corporation is located.

Service is consistently superior, the staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and extremely helpful. My pets always come home well-groomed and happy. I only trust Pets Plus with my furry family members. Not only that, they sell a wide variety of pet supplies which I find so convenient! If you're looking to buy, groom, or bored I strongly encourage you to give them a try. They also have a U-Haul division on site. We used a truck to send my daughter off to college ...cleanest U-Haul I've ever rented!

My family and I always stop by to see the puppies but today ensured we will not only stop by but never support this local business. While looking at puppies, I went to take a photo of a potential pet and the woman with straight hair and glasses working behind the dogs screamed at me that I couldn't take a photo and then continued to yell at her coworkers that the customers were idiots. She continued to scream despite the fact that the whole store could hear her behind the cages. I was not the only one who was yelled at and called names by this woman but the other customers also said they will NOT come back or purchase a dog. You would think a local business would be politer to their customers especially since they lost a family of five and another family's business. Pretty sad I can no longer support.
