Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis can usually be diagnosed during an office visit with a hands-on evaluation and a review of symptoms. Passive and active exercises can also help rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms. Mild plantar fasciitis may respond to oral pain relievers, but usually, additional treatment are required, including gentle stretching exercises using special splints, injections of corticosteroid medications to reduce inflammation and custom orthotics to provide better support to the midfoot region. Other treatment options may also be available. Early intervention is important for achieving faster relief from pain.

Bunions
That depends on different factors, including whether the toe joint has stiffened or if it’s still flexible. If the joint is flexible, gentle stretching and massage can help prevent arthritis and permanent deformity while special splints can be worn to help gently move the joint into its proper position. Custom orthotics can also play a role in bunion treatment. When the joint has stiffened or does not respond to conservative treatment, surgery may be needed to reposition the joint and hold it in place using tiny pins or screws. Some of the bone may also be removed to enable the joint to resume its normal position. A surgical boot worn following surgery will provide stability to the joint during healing.
Ingrown Toenails

Usually, the first sign of a toenail fungal infection is a small white or yellow spot that forms under the nail. Some discolorations can be caused by melanoma, so having any abnormality professionally evaluated is important to make sure the most appropriate treatment is promptly provided. As the infection spreads, the nail will become brittle and ragged and the discoloration will spread. Eventually, painful symptoms will develop, occurring when the nail area is pressed and when wearing shoes.
Corns
A bunion is a bony protuberance that extends or “sticks out” from the side of the foot at the base of the big toe where the joint is located. The bunion forms when the top portion of the toe is pushed inward toward the other toes, forcing the joint out of alignment. Without treatment, the joint can become more deformed and eventually, the big toe can cross over the neighboring toes, making it extremely difficult to find shoes that fit in addition to causing very painful symptoms. Corns, calluses, and blisters frequently form as a result of friction against the side of the bunion and, in time, the joint will become stiff and permanently deformed.

Physical Therapy
Mild to moderate ankle sprains may respond to conservative treatment options like rest, elevation, and application of ice packs to the soft tissues surrounding the joint. Over-the-counter or prescription medications may be used to reduce pain and inflammation so healing can occur, and splints, taping or bracing may be used to keep the joint stable and aligned as the tissues heal. If the sprain results in a torn ligament, surgery is usually required to repair or even replace the ligament so normal function can be restored. Physical therapy can be very useful in preventing the ankle from becoming stiff and in restoring strength and flexibility in the joint. A cane, crutches or other assistive devices may also be prescribed during healing to improve mobility while preventing excess strain on the joint.

The most common symptoms associated with an ankle sprain is localized pain and tenderness around the joint, often accompanied by swelling and sometimes redness. Painful symptoms become worse – sometimes quite severe – when the ankle is moved or weight is placed on the ankle. Sprains often cause a popping noise or sensation when the ligament overstretches and then “snaps” back into position, or when the ligament tears.

Bunions Problems
Bunions may be caused by repeated and long-term wear of shoes that are very tight in the toe area, including high heels and narrow shoes that squeeze the toes and push the top of the big toe inward. Often, bunions are caused by an inherited foot shape or gait pattern, and people who have family members with bunions are sometimes more likely to develop bunions as well. Bunions may also form as a result of arthritis, but they can also cause the toe joint to become arthritic. They can also form in young people as the foot grows and widens and normal footwear becomes too tight and binding.

Fungus Toenails
Toenail fungal infections are caused by dermatophytes, tiny, microscopic fungal bodies that thrive in warm, damp environments like public pools and showers and locker room floors. Walking barefoot in these areas can increase the risks of developing toenail fungus significantly. Wearing shoes and socks of someone who has a toenail fungus infection can also result in an infection. The fungus enters the nail bed through a small opening in the skin, and when skin is softened by exposure to water, it becomes easier for the fungus to enter. The nail provides a very tough barrier that makes it difficult for medications to reach the root of the infection, allowing infections to persist and making many topical medications ineffective in eradicating the fungus. People with a history of fungal infections and those with compromised immune or circulatory systems, including diabetes, are also more likely to become infected.
Hammertoes
Hammer toes form in people who wear shoes that don’t provide enough room in the toe portion of the shoes and in those with specific types of foot shapes. When the toe becomes crowded, it assumes the characteristic clawlike-appearance, and over time, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support the joint become permanently contracted. Initially, the joint will be flexible, enabling the toe to be straightened. But over time and without treatment, the joint can become permanently deformed. Hammer toes can form at any age, and they’re more common among people who wear high heels or narrow shoes, as well as those with arthritis or whose toes have been injured. They may also occur more commonly among people with impaired circulation, including those with diabetes.
Heel Spurs
The plantar fascia is a band of tough, fibrous tissue that spans the bottom of the foot, extending from the heel to the ball of the foot beneath the toes. Its function is to support the arch and the midfoot region while also helping the foot to remain flexible and stable while walking and running. Sometimes this tiny band becomes strained and overstretched, resulting in tiny tears and other tissue damage that can cause inflammation and pain. This condition is called plantar fasciitis, and it’s more common among older people, people who spend long periods of time on their feet, people whose feet are subjected to a lot of repetitive impacts like runners and dancers, and people who are obese. Some injuries can also cause plantar fasciitis, and heel spurs (bony deposits along the edge of the heel bone) can also cause the tissue to become inflamed and irritated.
Ingrown Toenails
At 23 years of age, the majority of all my health problems in my life that have required medical attention have manifested in my feet. Whether it was dyshidrotic eczema, ingrown toe nails that always seem to come back, bad staph infections, it is safe to say I have seen my fair share of podiatrists in my life. After working with Dr Bowers on two separate occasions now, both because of badly infected ingrown toenails, I can safely say he is the best podiatrist I have ever been too. Both operations were the least painless I’ve ever had, and believe it or not were actually enjoyable because what a cool guy he is. He is incredibly personable and easy to talk to but also really knows his trade inside and out. I’ve had multiple operations for ingrown toenails in my life, none of them pleasant, and with Dr Bowers I felt absolutely no pain during the operation. But even better was that as he offered a procedure to permanently prevent them for ever coming back, which was something up until that point I had never been told existed. My feet healed up beautifully both times thanks to his expertise as well as advice on how to make sure they heal right, even going so far as providing all gauze, wrap, padding etc. on the house which would normally cost over $50. You know a doctor is in it for all the right reasons when he tells you ” You know I would have probably made tens of thousands of more dollars If I charged for all the gauze I gave away for free over the years, but I just can’t justify making my patients pay the crazy amount to buy it over the counter.”. All in all there is not another podiatrist I would go to after Dr Bowers, and even if I ever move out of Johnsburg, IL, or hell even California, I will make the commute back to the city for his services.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis causes recurrent pain along the bottom and the side of the foot and around the heel area. Often, this pain subsides after a period of walking once the plantar fascia warms up and becomes more flexible, returning again after another period of inactivity. Many people find their symptoms are especially pronounced when getting up in the morning.
