As the largest professional agency in the state, the Vermont state troopers provide numerous professional development opportunities. Ducharme holds a number of special certifications, including one as a drug recognition expert: “There are 57 of us. We are called in when suspected DUI suspects may be impaired by something other than alcohol. We do a comprehensive evaluation, which includes taking vitals and pulse, as well as noting how they are acting, what they are saying, their body language, and how they perform on a divided-attention task. A toxicology report then tells us what is in their system. When a case goes to jury trial, I can testify as an expert witness rather than a lay witness. I can testify as to how drugs affect your body.”
Sex Crimes
Faye wrote to Barbara Gittings, activist and mother of the LGBT civil rights movement and a pioneer in the Homophile Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, which demanded rights for people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Gittings came to Vermont to give advice on advancing lesbian presence and rights in the state. We kept meeting new women who wanted to be part of this movement. The concerts of singer-songwriter and activist Holly Near, who came out in 1976, inspired women to come out during this time. Lesbians working with radical feminist heterosexual women together started Women Against Rape in Burlington, which later became the Women’s Rape Crisis Center.

Sexual Harassment
A few decades later, I find myself in the unbelievably fortunate position to be able to put my passion to work professionally. And the things that pull at me are surprisingly similar now, even though the shapes have shifted somewhat. Freedom from sexual harassment and assault, access to reproductive health care, and economic equity and security for all women are powerful motivators and apparently not just for me—Vermont leads the country in many ways in all these areas.
