By offering this therapy at BMC, patient experience has been improved by saving patients from having to travel to Boston for treatment. Many departments are involved in the successful implementation and delivery of Lutathera including Nuclear Medicine, D3B, Radiation Physics/Safety, D’Amour Center for Cancer Care, and the Pharmacy. Patient therapy is a significant component of Nuclear Medicine. Treatments, and sometimes pain relief, are offered for conditions such as Graves’ disease, thyroid cancer, liver cancer, cancer that has spread to the bone and refractory lymphomas. PET imaging or a PET scan, is a type of nuclear medicine imaging. In nuclear medicine, we use small safe amounts of radioactive material to diagnose or treat disease. This is a noninvasive procedure that is usually painless.

Computed Tomography
A computed tomography (CT) scan – sometimes called a CAT scan – is a noninvasive (no incision, no injection) medical test. CT scans help your physician diagnose and treat many types of medical conditions. Examinations can be performed either with or without intravenous contrast. Studies are interpreted by experienced board certified radiologists. The large size of our practice permits oversight and interpretation of studies by radiologists with fellowship training and expertise in all subspecialties of diagnostic imaging.

Radiation Oncology

In general, metal objects used in orthopedic surgery pose no risk during MRI. However, a recently placed artificial joint may require the use of another imaging procedure. When you and your physician are not certain about what the metal objects that might be inside you, the best course is often an x-ray to identify the objects with certainty.

Breast Surgery
Radiologists and physicians can find interpreting mammograms difficult. What is normal for one woman’s breast may not be normal for you. Factors that can cloud the image include powder or salve on the breasts, implants or the results of breast surgery.

Skin Cancer
PETs scans are precise. They measure the extent of disease to a much greater degree than any other tool physicians currently have. They work particularly well in assessing lymphoma, malignant melanoma, breast, lung, colon and cervical cancers.

In mammography, the X-ray reveals most lesions and calcifications, but it is difficult to distinguish whether or not they are benign (non-cancerous). If there is a chance an area is not benign, the patient is called back to the hospital for additional tests, which may include a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound, and in some patients, biopsy (extracting a sample of tissue for analysis). When the area identified is not cancerous, it means that the mammogram gave a false positive for breast cancer. At this point, a considerable amount of the patient’s and doctor’s time, hospital resources, and money have been used to perform tests that ultimately provide no benefit to the patient’s health.
