Motorcycle crash led to bike shop business... Gilberth G. Valverde owner of Somerville Bicycle Shop, fell in love with cycling following a severe accident in his native Costa Rica. Gilberth, at the age of 19, was a professional soccer player in Costa Rica. He recalls "after enjoying a night out with some of my teammates and fans on the way home I lost control of my motorcycle and woke up in the hospital nearly a week later in a hard-cast from the waist down." After the cast was removed, he started cycling to build back up his knee and an especially damaged leg. Gilberth took on this new activity beyond rehabilitation, training to eventually become a professional cyclist. "That's how I got into cycling...by accident". Now 13 years later...the store is just one of many wonderful things in Gilberth's life. "Everything I have, from my family to my shop, is because I've been blessed by God". The store opened March 1, 2009, but Gilberth is not a new resident to the Borough of Somerville. "I saw the need for a bicycle shop, so I decided to go for it! It's one of the best decisions I have made." Somerville has a rich history when it comes to cycling. The borough is the home of the Kugler-Anderson Memorial Tour of Somerville, the oldest bicycle race in the country. Gilberth has competed in the race every Memorial Day since 2007. The Somerville Bicycle Shop is geared to serve a variety of customers, from families looking for kid's bikes, commuters, weekend riders to the serious cyclists! The Somerville Bicycle Shop is here to serve the community!

The owner, Gilbert Gomez philosophy is, the customer is NOT always right. Today, he kicked me out of his store for life. My wife bought me a $250 Gift Card to his store, because I was raving about this cool bike I wanted at a great price at his shop a couple of months before getting the card. It was the lowest price bike in his store and on sale. After getting the Gift Card, I went to the store and they didn't have the bike color scheme I wanted. All they had was 8 identical bikes that were a drab grey and green color. I talked to GG back then and he said they can't get the bike color I wanted because they were all out of them and all he had was those 8 bikes I mentioned. I said, well I want to refund my gift card then because all the other bikes there were over $370. He said he couldn't, took my receipt and scanned it with his register gun saying, see I can't refund. My only alternative was to be suckered in buying something that was beyond my price range or go to my credit card and dispute which I did. A month later, we got a letter in the mail from my credit card company and with a letter from GG, the owner. The owner lied in his letter saying I never came to him for a refund, which I did when he tried to scan my receipt. He said I have to come to the store for the refund. So today I went to his store and mentioned I want a refund and right away the insults come out of his mouth saying that it was not a smart thing to do to refute the charges and started raising his voice at me. I raised my voice back and told him he lied to my credit card company with his letter, you would not refund my wife's credit card, you did not have the bike I want, you were trying to up-sell me to something I could not afford and now I have a bike which I don't need your card anymore. He then shouts, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED IN HERE ANYMORE. I bet that was on his mind ever since the credit card company contacted him. I said, the customer is always right and I am right here, he said the customer is not always right and I am not. Then he starts with this I am smarter than you bit with me as he is doing my refund. I then said snarkly did you read your letter you wrote? There were spelling and grammar errors all over it with the lying. He said to himself under his breath, I am going to be the better man. He should have done that from the beginning. I signed my slip and he never gave me back my copy of the credit. I asked for it and he insisted he gave to me and I am showing inside my wallet. I said, the adrenaline went to your head and that is why I didn't get it. He said I am going to call the cops on you if you don't get out of here. You are not allowed to be in my store, find another bike shop. His gives me my slip and I left disgusted.

Overall

My husband bought a good dirt bike here and it had an issue with one of the pedals (crank case really) and the shop took care of the entire (expensive) issue. It is not an inexpensive place, but they have good quality bikes and they know what they are talking about. Good location, friendly staff, but not cheap.
