Preventive Care

Dental Care
Eastlake Veterinary Hospital is a full service veterinary hospital providing excellent medical, surgical and dental care for dogs and cats. Our emphasis is on preventative health care which may increase the quality and longevity of our patients’ lives.
Vaccination
Bordetella: This vaccination is given to prevent contagious tracheobronchitis or “kennel cough.” If your dog will be going to boarding, day care or dog parks, this vaccine is especially important.
Behavioral Counseling
Male dogs not intended for breeding should be neutered to prevent prostate disease and minimize certain behavioral problems. Again, six months of age is a good time to perform this procedure.
Nutritional Counseling
It is more important how much you feed than what brand of food you choose. Exercise is important, but the most important factor in weight control is the quantity fed.
Comprehensive Examination
Simparica Trio is a pill that is given once a month that is excellent for flea and internal parasite control as well as being a heartworm preventive. A quick heartworm test is needed in dogs over 6 months of age prior to starting Simparica Trio. This will be done at their yearly annual exams.

Revolution is a topical solution that you will apply once monthly. In addition to monthly flea control, it also is a heartworm preventive and effective against some internal parasites.
Pain Management
Since graduating, Alex and his wife, Kristen (who is also a veterinarian!) have practiced in the Seattle area. As a veterinarian, Alex’s interests include pain management, surgery, dentistry, and preventative health care. Outside of work Alex enjoys the Seattle area’s great outdoors, live music, sports, and great food. On weekends, his family is always out on an adventure. The family includes two cats, Ethel and Murray, one dog, Frannie, and two human children, Tor and Thea.

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacteria spread by wildlife and ingested by dogs drinking out of puddles. It can be contracted by people so it is a human health concern. It is given in a series of two injections 3-4 weeks apart followed by a yearly booster.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV): This contagious retrovirus is a leading cause of death in cats. It is transmitted from cat to cat by licking or biting and may be passed from the mother cat to her kittens during pregnancy. We recommend that all cats be tested for FeLV. Strictly indoor cats do not require FeLV vaccinations. The FeLV vaccine is first given around 8-12 weeks of age, repeated in 3-4 weeks then annually.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Thyroid Disease Treatment
In senior patients we recommend laboratory testing at the time of the annual or semi-annual exam. This may be a blood test or blood and urine tests. Sometimes further testing such as blood pressure measurement will be recommended on the basis of the results of these tests. The most common diseases we diagnose in senior patients are dental disease, kidney disease, heart disease, and hyperthyroidism in cats.
Heart Disease Treatment
In complicated cardiology cases, we will have Dr. Jerry Woodfield, a board certified cardiologist, come to our office to do exams, cardiac ultrasounds, and EKGs.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease (gum disease) in dogs contributes to heart, liver, and kidney disease. For these reasons, along with issues of discomfort, we are concerned about dental disease.

Wound and Fracture Care
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV): This is another retrovirus, and is in the same class as the human AIDS virus. We recommend all new cats be tested for FIV. This virus causes an immune deficiency syndrome in cats and is primarily spread by bite wounds. FIV vaccine is available but is not recommended.

Dental Surgery
In addition to ovariohysterectomy and castration (spay and neuter) we perform numerous general surgical procedures, the most common of which are growth and tumor removals, biopsies, oral surgery and laceration repair. Procedures which are beyond our level of expertise are referred to a board certified surgeon, usually at the Animal Surgical Clinic of Seattle (ASC).

Dental Radiology
Periodontal disease, fractured teeth, and other oral health problems are common in dogs and cats. Our goal is to advise you on how to prevent and properly treat such conditions. We have a fully-equipped dental suite, including a Schick DR digital dental x-ray unit which aids in providing high quality dental care and oral surgery.
Microchipping
Microchipping is a form of permanent identification for your pet that cannot be lost or removed. Without ID, 90% of lost pets never return home.
