General Info
Doug Amidon, a professional woodcarver, with over 49 years of experience has opened the Hillport Gallery on Route 6A in Sandwich MA in 2016. Mr. Amidon purchased the house in 2015 with the idea of opening a larger Cape Cod Art Gallery to house his Folk Art and to offer space to other area artisans to display their work. The house was built in 1911, for the Cape Cod Canal Chief Engineer William Barclay Parsons. It is a Gustav Stickley designed house. Mr. Amidon, a former school teacher in Bourne and Wareham, left the profession in 1967, to concentrate on carving. His work adorns boats, homes, and businesses far and wide, a testament to his skill in carving wood. His tools are a combination of old and new but he prefers the old tools saying "old tools are more elegant". Mr. Amidon's work was recently showcased on WCVB TV's Chronicle. Some of the featured Artists at the Gallery include McDermott Glass, Lynn Ricci - Paintings, Norm Robinson - Bird Carver, and Wampanoag Shells - Jewelry. Doug’s own work adorns every room from clever carved Little Necks to full size Cigar Indians. Gallery is Open Monday thru Saturday from 10am to 3pm and is located just beyond the Cape Cod Five on Route 6A in Sandwich. www.hillportgallery.com
