X-rays
3D digital x-rays, also referred to as Cone Beam CT imaging, are essentially 3D images of the mouth and jaw that can be manipulated to better plan for implant placement, oral surgery procedures and TMJ. The state-of-the-art scans are accomplished in our office in a matter of seconds. They allow us to know more about your anatomy during the planning phase, so that we can perform less invasive procedures. We have invested in this technology to better serve our patients, and provide the peace of mind that our diagnosis and treatment plans are based on the most comprehensive information found in dental x-rays today. The 3D digital imaging uses at least 10 times less radiation than traditional medical CT scans.
Oral Cancer Screening
April is Oral Cancer Awareness month and Dr. Donnelly partnered with the Oral Cancer Foundation to help raise awareness in our community by offering free oral cancer screenings during the month of April. The Oral Cancer Foundation recognized Dr. Donnelly as significantly contributing to the early detection of this disease by incorporating a program of oral cancer screenings in his practice that will tangibly save lives. It was a pleasure helping educate our patients and others about the importance of recognizing signs of this disease.
Cavitron is an ultrasonic scaler that lets us remove staining easily during teeth cleanings. Staining builds up over time, as bacteria and plaque accumulate around the gum line. But with the power of Cavitron’s high frequency signal, in combination with its water feature, we can wash away this buildup to reveal healthier, better-looking teeth.
Fluoride Treatment
To offer patients—especially young patients—extra help, we can use services like dental sealants or a fluoride treatment. Dental sealants are applied as a liquid and then dried to form a thin barrier between teeth and bacteria. They’re most often used to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Fluoride treatments are administered as a mouthwash. What makes fluoride effective is the way it attracts minerals good for strengthening the enamel of teeth.
Beyond this, tooth-colored fillings are more supportive than amalgam fillings are. Amalgam is an inflexible material that can change shape with changes in temperature. Because of this, it’s possible for teeth to crack, increasing your risk of bacterial reinvasion. Compare this with the composite resin used for tooth-colored fillings. Composite resin is more flexible and actually bonds to teeth. The result is a more natural filling. What’s more, because tooth-colored fillings bond with teeth in a way that amalgam fillings don’t, you can keep more of your natural smile.
Resin Composite
But outside of these technologies, fillings themselves have changed. Instead of relying on metal fillings, known as amalgams, Dr. Donnelly uses tooth-colored fillings. Made of durable composite resin, tooth-colored fillings resemble the color of teeth so they don’t stand out. Compare this with amalgam fillings, which are an unattractive, dark gray color. Patients who have had amalgam fillings in the past might hesitate to seek help because they don’t want to mar their smile further. But with tooth-colored fillings, you don’t have to worry about how the finished results will look.
Veneers
Crowns
What happens when a tooth becomes cracked, broken, decayed, or worn down? It needs restorative help with a crown. At San Marcos Gentle Dental, Dr. Donnelly uses custom-made porcelain crowns to help patients return structure and functionality to a compromised tooth.

Teeth are made up of three layers: the protective enamel on the outside, a sensitive layer of dentin underneath, and the nerve at the very center. In most cases, when you’re facing an oral health issue, it’s the first and second layers that are affected. But sometimes, through an injury or deep decay, that third layer can need attention with a root canal.
At San Marcos Gentle Dental, Dr. Donnelly offers many excellent services to help patients restore functionality and appearance. Two of those services are bridges and dentures.
