The skills and knowledge that I bring come from over 40 years of intensive study and practice in the field of somatics, from working as a physical therapist in rehab, home care, adult day health, schools, private practice, pain programs, and primary care clinics; and personal exploration of processes to promote well-being.

Urinary Incontinence
Incontinence is defined as any involuntary loss of urine. If you leak when you don't want to, you have urinary incontinence. Incontinence can be a problem for women and men of all ages. Incontinence is separated into three categories.

Pelvic Pain
Labor and Delivery
For example, the pelvic floor can be injured, or too weak or too strong. Pelvic floor dysfunction is very common. Symptoms include pain in the back or pelvis or with sex, balance difficulties, incontinence or constipation. Some of the common reasons for this are due to hormonal changes, trauma, childbirth, abdominal or hip surgeries, or a decrease in exercise. This is not just for older women. You might be surprised to learn that younger women, and men also may have pelvic floor imbalance, sometimes from doing too many crunches, or stress or, for men, an enlarged prostate.

Interstitial Cystitis
You can use this reflex to change your habits. If you have 'key in the door' incontinence, use this reflex to retrain your bladder. Make it relax until you are in the right place to go. Each time you get the urge, stop where you are, breathe and contract the pelvic floor several times to relax the bladder. You may have to stand or sit still to do this. You can also use this technique to retrain your bladder so that you don't get up so often in the night or go too frequently during the day. Of course, if you are urinating a large volume, then you have to go, but if there is only a small amount of urine, you can try to decrease the sensitivity of your bladder and the frequency of voiding. (NOTE: This technique of bladder retraining is not recommended if you have interstitial cystitis and some other pelvic pain conditions.) If you listen to the sound of the urine stream and count the seconds, you can get feedback on how much urine was in your bladder. If the sound lasts only 2-5 seconds, perhaps you didn't have to go. Of course this is not a rule, just a guideline. The length of time you urinate also depends on how fast the stream is going, and this is a function of the bladder. You can notice your own rhythms, when your bladder is up and running and other times when it seems a little slow and sleepy.

Neurology
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984). The Method was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, DSc (Doctor of Science, Sorbonne) — engineer, physicist, martial artist, and pioneer in human deveopment. He authored many books that among the first to explore the study of the relationship between consciousness and movement. The breadth, vitality and precision of his work and Method has seen it applied in the fields of rehabilitation, neurology, psychology, performing arts, and sports.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Cliff Smyth's knowledge and experience in helping people recover from Repetitive Strain Injuries (carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, hand pain) is featured in the April edition of the Feldenkrais Guild's public newsletter, SenseAbility. It’s not just for women. There are importance benefits for men from doing pelvic floor exercise. There was an interesting study of 55 men in Australia, with an average age of 59, who had erectile dysfunction for six months or more. The improvement in erectile function was the same as that from Viagra! That is, 40% regained normal function, 35.5% improved and 25.5% showed no difference. Men who have had a prostatectomy, or abdominal surgery, a hip replacement, or digestive issuses can be helped with this approach.
