Cervicogenic headaches: these headaches are characterized by neck pain that spreads to the back of the head toward the front. The headaches are moderate in intensity with a burning or aching quality. The pain usually follows the distribution of the occipital nerve and gives rise from the C1-4 cervical nerve roots. The neck is often tender to firm touch especially in the upper parts closer to the base of the head. These symptoms are often caused from spinal joint fixation (biomechanical joint problems), whiplash injuries, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs and rarely tumors, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and osteomyelitis (bone infections).

Patients who have failed conservative care or have reached a "plateau" are potential candidates for this procedure. However, careful selection of qualified candidates is key to success. The doctor will determine if M.U.A. is an option for you. Once you are approved for M.U.A., you will require a complete medical screening so you can be cleared for sedation. The doctor may also order additional tests such as MRIs, blood tests, EKG, chest x-ray and pregnancy test.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Commonly referred to as CTS, carpal tunnel syndrome is the result of entrapment of the median nerve at the wrist. More than 50 percent of the diagnosed cases of CTS are thought to be work related. The entrapment is caused by a rise in pressure of the defined space where the median nerve accompanies the flexor tendons as they pass under the flexor retinaculum which is a fibrous sheath to prevent fraying of the tendons. Through some types of repetitive movements such as typing, the consistent flexion and extension at the wrist and increased tendon sheath thickening give rise to increased carpal tunnel pressure resulting in pain and tingling in the hands. The pain is worse sometimes at night. The tingling can be well localized or diffuse in the second and middle fingers. Abduction of the thumb is sometimes weak or impaired along with atrophy in more severe cases. Tapping over the wrist at the base of the palm causing a lightening sensation of tingling in the hand is a good clinical indication that a patient may have CTS.

Hi, my name is Luis Contreras and I was a victim of chronic low back pain for 3 long years. Whiplash
Now medically referred to as Cervical Acceleration/Deceleration Syndrome, whiplash is a general term which describes the head suddenly whipping backward in extension and then forward in flexion most commonly from rear end collisions. Other synonyms include cervical sprain/strain. Symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, stiffness, loss of normal range of motion, muscle spasm, headaches, hoarseness or difficulty swallowing, numbness or tingling in the arms or hands, and upper back pain. The most common structures affected by whiplash include the muscles, ligaments, joints, disc and potentially the spinal nerves or spinal cord depending on severity. The most common mistake I see patients make is not following up with a doctor after this type of injury, even though your injuries or pain may be minor and seem fairly insignificant. More often than not I see patients one, two or sometimes even ten years after their accident and state they are still having dull achey pain in the neck that is worse and better at different times. Why is this, how can that happen in low impact or low severity collisions? This phenomenon known as hidden injuries or latent injuries occurs do to improper healing of the muscles, ligaments and joints and how they function. If your muscles, joints and ligaments essentially heal "crooked," they will stay that way until they are restored to their original state as in before the accident. More severely, whiplash injuries can also damage the disc between the bones. See topic of herniated discs above to learn about the potential risks and symptoms associated with disc herniations.
Pinched Nerve
Like most musculoskeletal conditions, there may be many causes of pain. Often, neck pain is caused from overuse or repetitive positional stress on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints of the neck. Sleeping face down with your neck twisted to one side all night or even long hours at the computer with your head stretched forward can cause neck pain. Less frequently, neck pain is caused by accidents (motor vehicle accidents, work injuries, slips and falls). More serious conditions also exist which can cause neck pain such as infections, tumors, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), herniated discs, spinal degeneration, bone spurs and other conditions. Symptoms of neck pain include dull aches and pains, stiffness, soreness, severe pain limiting mobility ("crick or pinch feeling"), burning into the arm(s) and hands, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness. Arm pain, muscle weakness and numbness and tingling are generally, but not always a good indication of spinal nerve root pressure or a "pinched nerve." Some indications of serious illness that require EMERGENT attention may include but not limited to chest pain with or without arm pain, loss of balance and coordination, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, loss of vision, severe unrelenting headache, paralysis and sudden onset of severe muscle weakness.
Hip Replacement
It is now 30-days since I had my last treatment. I feel as though I have had my life given back to me. I am once again doing all the things I used to do including exercise in the gym 5 times a week and walking almost a mile a day. I can’t play racquetball because I had a hip replacement but I feel ready to play. The causes of arm pain can sometimes be very obvious or somewhat elusive depending on the reason for the pain. Obvious causes could be a recent injury, such as playing sports or lifting something too heavy. The symptoms may occur suddenly or gradual over a period of time. The pain may be severe and sharp or dull and vague. All descriptions of the pain are important and useful to the doctor when trying to accurately diagnose your condition. There are also other less obvious causes where it is important to know exactly where the pain is felt, what time of day the pain occurs, what makes the pain better or worse or if there are other more serious symptoms associated with the arm pain such as fever, night sweats, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, numbness or tingling. Sometimes the pain may be referred pain from a totally different area of the body such as the neck. This is most often caused from a herniated disc which compresses the spinal nerve roots and sometimes affects the spinal cord itself. The discs are the shock absorbers that sit between the bones of the spine. These discs can rupture through injury or disc degeneration and "pinch" the exiting nerves of that particular spinal level. Classic symptoms include a burning sensation in the arm and hand in a distrubutional type pattern, ie. inside or outside of the forearm, 1st and second digits, middle digit or 4th and 5th digits. Many times patients experience numbness and tingling in the same type patterns. Occasionally if the compression is severe, weakness may develop in a certain group of muscles. When the spinal cord is impinged with a large disc herniation or with associated spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), symptoms such as heaviness in the legs, loss of fine motor skills or an inability to walk a brisk pace may develop. These symptoms are referred to as myelopathy. This is an associated condition that is much more serious and the causes of such symptoms should be investigated quickly. Myelopathy can also be caused from space occupying lesions such as tumors pressing on the spinal cord.

Sports Medicine
The term sports injury is a broad term generally reserved for injuries occurring while playing sports or exercising. Sports injuries may occur from accidents, improper training, overuse, lack of proper warm up and stretching, or poor conditioning such as the weekend warrior. While sports injuries can be quite painful, seldom are they serious and require surgery. Sports injuries commonly involve the musculoskeletal system which means the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. Rarely do we see head injuries, spinal cord injuries or internal disorders from sports injuries.
Physical Therapy
Rotator Cuff Injuries: There are approximately 1.5 million visits each year to orthopedic surgeons around the U.S. for shoulder related problems. The rotator cuff is composed of 4 tendons with their associated muscles that give movement and stability to the shoulder joint. The muscles that give rise to the rotator cuff are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. The most common of these tendons which are injured or torn is the supraspinatus tendon. The action of this muscle raises the arm primarily for the first 15 degrees of abduction. Symptoms include shoulder pain, loss of strength, pain with movement (especially away from the body or overhead), problems getting dressed or grooming your hair. There may or may not be associated clicking or popping with movement of the shoulder. Shoulder injuries can be caused from stressful throwing injuries, heavy lifting or pulling or falls, such as from a bike or motorcycle. It is important to accurately diagnose the true cause of shoulder pain due to the complexity of the shoulder and amount of other similar conditions that are associated with shoulder pain. Most all shoulder injuries can be managed conservatively through physical therapy, exercise and medication. Usually only full thickness tears require surgery or significant degeneration.
Frozen Shoulder
Other shoulder injuries include labral cartilage tears, subacromial bursitis, frozen shoulder syndrome, shoulder dislocations, and sprains and strains of the shoulder.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis Elbow: The medical term for this condition is known as lateral epicodylitis. Tennis elbow is usually characterized by pain or tenderness to touch on the outside of the elbow especially with certain movements such as twisting and gripping and possible inflammation. The cause of tennis elbow occurs from repetitive stress or injury to the common extensor tendon and muscle at the insertion on the lateral epicondyle of the elbow. Such activities may include racket sports requiring a back hand stroke, prolonged typing or using a screwdriver.

Chiropractic is a distinct branch of the health care professions. Chiropractors are doctors who specialize in the evaluation and treatment of disorders primarily involving the nerves, muscles, bones and joints. They perform detailed histories, physical examination including orthopedic and neurological tests, laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging to formulate a successful plan of action to effectively treat your condition. Chiropractors are generally very conservative in their approach to treating pain and their techniques have become the most widely accepted and most effective alternative treatment of back pain. Typical treatments include exercise, joint mobilization, application of modalities such as heat, ice, electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound. Physical Therapists may also work to improve functional abilities in walking, getting in/out of bed, strength, balance, gross motor skills and endurance.
