Never Shop SEARS Again!

After her 33 years of being a loyal Sears customer, I received an agitated telephone call yesterday from my mother after having suffered an experience in this store which no consumer should ever have to confront.

In late June, mom purchased a refrigerator from this Sears Hometown in Ruidoso, a franchise (not Sears Roebuck & Co.) operated by the mother-son partnership of Joan Junge and Matthew Bridges.

Following her late June purchase, mom scheduled for the refrigerator to be delivered and installed. Upon delivery in early July, she noticed a small dent on the refrigerator, and asked for advice on how to remedy this fault. The installing technician took a photo, and told her she would be eligible for a 10 percent discount, or an undamaged replacement part. She opted for the part, told the technician as much, and presumed that the issue would be resolved in the coming days.

Yesterday, 4 August, mom went into the store to inquire as to why she had not heard from anyone to follow up on the repair for the dented part. She had the misfortune of dealing with Matthew Bridges.

Mr. Bridges was unhelpful, and agitated. Mom was frustrated with his attitude, and frustrated with the delay. At one point in the conversation she exclaimed "Jesus!" in exasperation with the delay in receiving service, and with Mr. Bridges' regrettable attitude.

At this point, Matthew Bridges completely lost it, becoming a bully, out of control, and abusive to a (formerly) loyal customer; causing a deplorable, ugly, disrespectful, and unnecessary scene in the Sears Hometown Store showroom. He screamed at mom about having "taken the Lord's name in vain," declared Sears Hometown Store to be "God's house," and hounded her to leave, still screaming, in a showroom filled with other customers (and her neighbors). Mr. Bridges used his position, his voice, and his size to bully, intimidate, and scream at a 5'3" woman in her fifties who has recently had heart surgery.

Later in the day, mom and Mr. Bridges got in touch to discuss the options she had regarding the refrigerator. During this discussion, mom related to Mr. Bridges what she was told by the installer: a ten percent discount, or a replacement part, were applicable remedies.

Mr. Bridges said he was unwilling to issue a replacement part, that it was impossible. Moreover, he insinuated that he could apply additional charges to the cost of delivery if he so desired. Mom elected to accept the ten percent discount and to bring to a close the last transaction she will ever have with any company affiliated with Sears.

She related to Mr. Bridges that for over thirty years, furnishing multiple homes, she had been a loyal buyer of Sears' home appliances and other products . She's quite the handywoman, and has a sizeable and-- until now, growing-- collection of Sears and Craftsman tools and hardware at her homes as well. She expressed to Mr. Bridges that his grotesque interaction with her assured that she will never again shop for anything at Sears.

Todd Bridges' reply to her, rather than any sort of contrition or offer of an apology, was to say, "Well, forget about the ten percent discount, then," and something about chalking it up to a bad day.

Then he hung up the phone.

I cannot express strongly enough the degree to which we are offended by the bullying, discriminatory conduct on the part Joan Junge and Matthew Bridges' Sears Hometown Store toward a customer who has spent years, and tens of thousands of dollars, shopping at Sears.
