My son was seen at the Cartersville ER for an allergic reaction that turned his hands red and caused him a great deal of pain. The ER said to contact his PCP immediately. We moved to Georgia less than a year ago and had no reason to seek medical care before this, so he had never seen the PCP assigned to him by Amerigroup, which was Melissa Davis at the Harbin Clinic. When we called we were told that they refused to see him without new patient paperwork being completed and medical history from a previous doctor received, that we couldn't fill out the paperwork in the office and it would take 2+ weeks to process before they would schedule an appointment, and they said if it was urgent to take him back to his former doctor (in another state!) We explained that we could not immediately drive several hours to have him seen, that this office has a duty of care as the assigned provider, that there should be no reason why we couldn't fill out the new patient paperwork in the office (like in every other doctor's office in the world) and have him seen quickly because he really was in need of immediate care. It went all the way to the office manager who apologized and said "sorry, that's just this office's policy, it's the way we do things, if you have a problem with it call Amerigroup and have them switch his provider." I told her this was unacceptable, that this was the assigned doctor and my child NEEDED help right away, that this office has no valid reason to refuse to see a child in need of a doctor, and she hung up on me with a "Have a nice day." Unbelievable. Obviously this clinic doesn't want to honor care obligations to Medicaid recipients and have a terrible attitude. I've never in my life dealt with a doctor's office who REFUSED to see a child in need because of paperwork and ordered the parents to take him out of state to see his former doctor instead. Absolutely sickening.
