General Info
"Kindred Hospitals continue the care that short-term hospitals provide. We offer high quality post-acute hospital care to patients with medically complex conditions. These patients are critically ill and have few care options left; they come to us because they require aggressive, specialized care and a prolonged recovery time beyond their stay in a traditional short-term acute care hospital. Our patients have serious medical conditions, often many at the same time, requiring a coordinated, specialized approach, directed by physicians, to meet their daily medical needs."

Overall

My experience for my mother as a patient at Vibra has been nothing but a poor experience, she went with clear skin left with pressure areas, staff never available to speak with family, physicians lack compassion, nurses lack experience, supervisors are worthless no actual need for them, there should never be one nurse taking care of all of the high acuity patients such as 2 patients in restraints that are trying to get up and 1 receiving blood products ( where you are suppose to stay with the patient). However that's the norm for Vibra, No updates from the physician throughout her stay, in my opinion they should not be allowed to stay in service as a hospital this place is nothing more than a high end SNF and that's only because they have a doctor or two that stays on site, and they can do dialysis on site otherwise everything else operates just like a nursing facility. Most of the staff is Agency nurses no continuity of care for the patient. The room stayed dirty with stool on the toilet for 9 days straight, but then we question why patients leave the hospital with hospital acquired infections(unclean environment). Vibra is just a holding area for patients whose time is up at the surrounding hospital, they should be ashamed of themselves for giving the care that they do and get compensated for it. The nursing staff unbelievable, I can honestly say that I have only had the opportunity of 3 competent nurses since she's been a a patient at Vibra the others know just enough to answer a one part question. What a disgrace to those that market for this company, all I can say is his they lied.... By no means is this place ran as a hospital, If I ever had to suggest a place to anyone Vibra would NOT be on the list. Unfortunately I have to select a star rating otherwise I can't get pass this portion they don't deserve any stars for the care they have given...

Vibra took over Kindred and really changed this place around! We took a chance and sent our dad to help with all of his wounds, and we experience really great care. The nurses were really attentive and really sought took care to see that my dad's wounds get better. The doctors were always available when we needed them. The good news is that my dad got a lot better and is now happily recovering at a nursing home.

Stay Away... New Name, Same Horrible Experience

Kindred was recently bought out and renamed Vibra. All this has done is given them a new excuse for their abysmal care. "Please bear with us as we have just gone under some management changes." Most of the staff is forgetful, lackadaisical, and unsanitary. When you question the care your loved one is receiving, you get excuses, apologies, and promises of change, but nothing ever happens. If your insurance company tries to send your family member here, beg for them to go elsewhere. I am amazed this place is allowed to stay open.

My husband was a patient at Kindred in Richmond for a month in 2011. It was the middle hospitalization of a three month/three hospital stay following a massive brain stem stroke. I agree with other posts concerning the long distance from our home; we live in Fredericksburg and it was a tough four weeks. However, this was the perfect place for him. There is nothing like it in our area and driving north into the DC area was absolutely not acceptable.

The staff at Kindred was at all times thoughtful and caring, not just of my husband but to me and our daughters. There was always someone to speak to concerning his care. Everyone from the nursing assistants to the nurses, the doctors, therapists, the pharmacy and the administration did all they could to make this as good an experience for us as was possible.

My husband's care was tedious but they never complained about the setbacks. They made certain we were in the loop at all times and if there was ever a question about his care someone was available to speak with me within a reasonable time period. Any problems were taken care of quickly and without question.

We went back to visit the facility recently. They remembered us, which is amazing to us both. The people who are there care about their patients. They make it personal. They are saddened when something is not working and elated when there is progress. When we left Kindred my husband was barely able to get out of bed and into a wheelchair with assistance. The PT staff cried when they saw him walk in with a walker. They were delighted with his progress, even two years later.

When a critical care facility is no longer necessary and a rehabilitation hospital is not yet feasible, this is the exact place a patient with multiple issues needs to be. We are so very thankful that we spent those four weeks at Kindred. We could not have been in a better place.

If you are not local to this facility and a family member is place here -- be careful!

My spouse was recently a patient at the Kindred Hospital of Richmond and I found there to be a significant communication challenge in ensuring I was aware of his treatment goals and accomplishments for the day. The nursing staff was never available via phone, and I was always informed to call back or they would contact me later. The discharge planners provide the appearance of being proactive, however, lack execution of plan details. Expect delays; expect lack of follow-up. Patient reports are not accurately documented. My husbands discharge paperwork indicated activities that were not being accomplished for nearly a week prior to his discharge. The discharge paperwork also contained diagnostics information not previously documented prior to arrival to the facility. The new diagnostic was never discussed with him.

I would recommend if you have no other choice -- we didn't-- and you have to use this facility, proactively manage the care of your family member. This is especially true if they are unable to communicate. You need to also ensure they clearly understand there is ONE single point of contact for discussions, and that individual is updated concurrent with the patient.

I completely agree with the other negative reviews of Kindred Hospital-Richmond. My mother was a patient there from 1/11-3/11. She died at VCU, where she was sent from Kindred. The care she received at Kindred was a disgrace. The nurse/CNA -patient ratio, while perhaps legal, is sorely inadequate for a facility in which all patients are seriously ill and need care and supervision. The physicians with whom we came in contact were unprofessional, uncaring, and, in my opinion, incompetent. My mother was prescribed and administered a drug to which she had a documented allergy and which caused renal failure. When we became aware that my mother was being administered a drug that could kill her even though this was clearly stated in her medical records, the hospital administrator's comment to me was, "We dropped the ball." She sustained a fall which required transport to VCU for sutures. While I had expressed concerns that my mother may try to get up and fall, my concerns fell on deaf ears. My mother was a patient at Kindred for approx. 1 1/2 months. Over the years I have had much experience with hospitals and medical facilities in which other family members were treated for serious conditions. I have never experienced such a horrible situation as the one my mother was exposed to at Kindred. I made a formal complaint to the Commonwealth of Virginia Office of Licensure and Certification on 2/29/12. Of my 7 allegations of medical neglect, 4 were found substantiated. 3 of the allegations were unsubstantiated due to lack of sufficient evidence. In addition, according to documentation I received from the Office of Licensure and Certification, Kindred, 3 regulatory violations were cited based on my formal complaint and the hospital was asked to submit an Acceptable Plan of Corrections (POC). My advice if you are considering a facility for a seriously ill family member, avoid Kindred Hospital.

Each time I have entered the doors of this facility to visit my loved one, I was greeted by some snobbish supervisor, manager, or the like, who made many promises to correct problems or reassured that they'd never happen again. Yet I still get calls from my loved one begging for me to come and rescue her from this facility, claiming staff is abusive either verbally or physically. She has had her room changed 5 or 6 times in the matter of less than two months, each time I have to locate her, because no one even knows where the population is moved to. I have witnessed more than once a couple people from management yelling at staff, just outside residents rooms. Very unprofessional. Poorly staffed. Poorly managed. We will be changing hospitals in the morning!!

DO NOT. I REPEAT. DO NOT volun...

STAY AWAY!!! DO NOT. I REPEAT. DO NOT voluntarily take yourself or anyone that you care about in the slightest to this place!!!!! The nurses are lacking SERIOUS training except for a few that either must be binded by contract which requires them to stay employed here or they're just completely and absolutely desperate for work. If there's an emergency or you need someone to help your family member, no one ever comes. Medications are forgotten, patients complaints and requests are completely ignored and one nurse doesn't know what is going on with the patient to the next nurse. And the doctors...how did they get their degree?? Still not exactly sure how that happened!! The management is horrible, don't even bother filing complaints on the lack of care a patient receives. They'll act concerned to your face but then nothing ever changes. I truly have NO idea how the state still allows this place to operate. I'm told by so many other people in the healthcare business that complaint after complaint has been filed but somehow they continue to get away with what they're doing. If your family member requires this facility for continuing care, I suggest you look a little further up the road like we did in either Northern VA or in Virginia Beach for a similar facility. Once our family member was taken out of here and into another similar facility further away, it was a world of difference. You've been warned.
