Along with wellness and preventive care, dental care is a fundamental component of your pet’s long-term health plan. Many pets have poor oral hygiene due to lack of brushing and professional cleanings, which can result in gingivitis or even gum disease. Gum disease occurs as a result of calculus (hardened plaque) spreading below the gum line, attacking the tooth’s supporting tissues and eventually leading to the loss of that tooth. Our veterinary team in Richmond understands the importance of cleaning your dog and cat’s teeth, because poor oral hygiene can have a detrimental affect on other parts of their body.
Vaccination
Dog and cat vaccines are an essential ingredient in your pet’s wellness care regimen. They are one of the most effective forms of disease prevention, and can keep your pet healthier, longer. We also offer vaccine titers here in Richmond, to assess your pet’s immunity levels and determine whether vaccinations are absolutely necessary. As with human vaccines, pet vaccinations stimulate the immune system into producing antibodies to fight off intrusive viruses. When your veterinarian first meets your pet, they will help you decide which vaccines will be the most beneficial for their health.

Comprehensive Examination
To help your pet live their longest, healthiest life, we recommend bringing them in for a wellness exam once a year. Since your pet’s health is always our highest priority, we offer a comprehensive wellness program that is designed to meet all of their most essential needs. Pet wellness care also serves as a preventive measure against various illnesses and diseases that your companion may encounter during their lifetime. Our dedicated veterinarian and support team here in Richmond firmly believe that routine wellness exams and related treatments are key to keeping your pet as healthy as possible.
We carry popular items like flea and tick preventatives, as well as heartworm preventatives and other medications. If you have any questions or want to learn more about our pharmacy, please call us at
Pain Management
At Skipworth Veterinary Clinic in Richmond, keeping pets healthy is our highest priority, but minimizing pain is also important, because your pet deserves to be comfortable and capable of moving around without difficulty. Dr. Skipworth is more than happy to offer pain management and pain relief for dogs and cats recovering from surgery or experiencing back pain, muscle pain, arthritis, or other discomforts resulting from disease or injury. Before we can settle on a treatment, however, we will need to examine your pet to identify the cause of their pain.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
We see a large number of dog and cat allergy cases here in Richmond, and these typically manifest as skin conditions. Itching is one of the most common allergy symptoms afflicting pets. When pets itch, they scratch, and if the scratching continues unchecked for weeks, they can be left with a damaged skin barrier and the potential for infection.
The non-core vaccines listed above are suggested for pets that may be at risk of exposure to those viruses. The Lepto and Lyme vaccines are recommended for dogs that spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, and run the risk of encountering leptospirosis and ticks (which can transmit Lyme disease) in their environment. Bordetella, the kennel cough vaccine, is recommended for dogs that will be boarding, visiting the dog park, going to the groomer, or spending time at daycare. Influenza is also recommended for dogs that are boarding or in daycare.
Ear Infection Treatment
A complete evaluation of your pet’s health would not be possible without our in-house diagnostics capabilities here in Richmond. A routine physical exam can help us detect lumps, bumps, ear infections and other problems, but it does not tell us what is going on with your pet’s various internal systems. Our pet diagnostics equipment is not only important for routine wellness visits; it can also help us detect parasites and signs of disease in sick pets urgently in need of care. When time is of the essence, our team can detect, diagnose, and plan treatments for a variety of conditions in pets within the same day.
Dog and cat surgery is a common treatment option for pets, either as a preventive measure or to treat an acute condition. At Skipworth Veterinary Clinic in Richmond, we understand that even the most routine surgeries can be stressful for pets and their owners alike. As a well-loved member of your family, the thought of them being exposed to even minor risks can be unpleasant. We can assure you that our friendly team of veterinary professionals will put you at ease and explain the process to you so that you will know what to expect. Our veterinarian and assistants always go the extra mile to ensure that our patients are safe, healthy, and comfortable.
Spaying and Neutering
If you recently brought home a new puppy or kitten, you will need to plan for their spay or neuter surgery when they reach the appropriate age. Cat and dog neutering and spaying benefits pets both as a preventative against infection and certain types of cancer, and as a deterrent to pet overpopulation. The overall goal of cat and dog neuter and spay surgeries is to help as many pets as possible live longer, healthier lives. At Skipworth Veterinary Clinic in Richmond, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of care, and take every step to make spaying and neutering a safe and easy experience for all of our patients.
Your veterinarian can help you decide on the best time to have your cat and dog neutered or spayed. As with any other surgical procedure, we prefer to exercise caution and make absolutely certain that your pet has undergone a comprehensive health evaluation and blood work to ensure they’re healthy.
X-Ray
To examine your pet’s musculoskeletal system and abdominal and thoracic cavities, we turn to our advanced digital radiography (X-ray) equipment. X-ray is one of the most commonly used dog and cat diagnostics tools due to its reliability. Unlike traditional film X-ray, digital X-ray does not require loading film into trays and soaking film in developing fluid. In fact, the digital X-ray process is highly efficient, and produces a much sharper image. After X-ray images are taken, we can save them onto a computer for later review, or send them via email to outside specialists for interpretation.
