Surgeons work closely with colleagues in gastroenterology, oncology, radiation oncology, urology and other specialties to ensure that you receive comprehensive, innovative and supportive care.

Lung Cancer
Our surgeons provide state-of-the-art surgical techniques and cancer therapies, with a major focus on early diagnosis, better cancer staging, surgical treatment and prediction of recurrence in lung, esophageal, and gastric cancer. We take a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of these cancers working closely with other specialists. Our thoracic surgeons treat the following diseases: cancer and benign diseases the lungs, esophagus, stomach and mediastinum. This includes lung cancer, esophageal cancer, benign esophageal diseases (including achalasia, benign tumors and strictures), gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernias, mediastinal tumors and diseases (including the surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis), mesothelioma, pleural diseases (including pneumothorax, infections and pleural effusions), and chest wall tumors. We also perform procedures to treat thoracic outlet obstruction, excessive sweating of the palms (hyperhidrosis) and in select cases the surgical treatment of emphysema.

He is currently a member of the Southwest Surgical Congress, American Society of Breast Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Juell is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He is a member of the Americas Hernia Society. Dr. Juell is a member of the Trauma Panel at Renown Regional and a member of the surgical intensivist panel at Renown Regional Medical Center. He is also the current director for Renownâ€™s Breast Cancer Center. He is the only surgeon in Northern Nevada certified in breast ultrasound by the American Societies of Breast Surgeons & Radiology. Dr. Juell is the past Chief of Staff for Saint Maryâ€™s and is on the Quality Improvement Committee for Prominence Health Plans. He is currently the President of Western Physicians Alliance.

There are many more options available today for women diagnosed with breast cancer than ever before. While our focus is on the surgical aspects of treatment, patients with breast cancer are treated as part of a multidisciplinary team involving a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, plastic surgeon and other support personnel. Continuing education by reading journals, attending professional society meetings, and tumor boards allow WSG breast surgeons to be aware of the advances being made regarding recommendations for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, molecular testing, genetic testing, and other areas.

General Surgery
Colon and rectal surgeons have completed training in general surgery as well as advanced training in the treatment of colon and rectal problems. They have particular expertise in colon and rectal cancer, colon polyps, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, as well as anal problems such as hemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, constipation and fecal incontinence.
Wound Care
Christopher L. Madsen, M.D. is a Board Certified General Surgeon who is returning to his hometown here in Reno, Nevada to join our practice, starting November 1. Dr. Madsen is a fourth generation Nevadan and graduated from Reno High School in addition to attending the University of Nevada, Reno for his undergraduate and medical school education. After medical school, Dr. Madsen went to Baltimore, Maryland and completed his General Surgery residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, as well as a Research Fellowship in wound healing and soft tissue regeneration at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Madsen underwent an additional 18 months of clinical fellowship training focused on burn and wound care, diseases of the breast and soft tissue reconstruction before deciding to begin his general surgery practice.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Colon and rectal surgeons are skilled in specific techniques including robotic surgery, complex minimally invasive surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery, and sacral nerve stimulation for fecal incontinence.
Vascular Surgery
Dr. Gomez has been performing general, thoracic, trauma and vascular surgery in the Reno community for almost thirty years. He has been instrumental in developing practices in Reno that continually assess new approaches and techniques to benefit patients. He conveys respect for patients as individuals, extending the highest level of courtesy and quality care that are fundamental to quality outcomes. He is currently the medical director of trauma services and chief of surgery at Renown Regional Medical Center. In addition, he is medical director of quality at Renown Regional Medical Center. He is trauma center site reviewer for the American College of Surgeons.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Nunley was a general surgeon in the United States Army, where he completed two tours in Iraq and has received several service medals. He has previously held positions as Trauma Medical Director, Assistant Chief of Surgery and served on the Utilization management committee at Saint Lukes East in Kansas City. Dr. Nunley is a past Chief of Surgery at Renown South Meadows and St. Maryâ€™s Regional Medical Center and also sits on the Robotic Surgery Steering Committee at Northern Nevada Medical Center.

Breast Surgery
Many women are understandably anxious when told that they are being referred to a breast surgeon, especially if it is not clear what the problem is. WSG breast surgeons are trained to evaluate and manage patients with breast pain, benign lumps and cysts and abnormal mammograms, in addition to breast cancer. It is important to realize that the majority of benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions do not require surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is the process of using a small video camera and other small utensils to accompany a surgical procedure. The video camera allows an image of organs to be displayed on a monitor. Essentially, this monitor becomes the surgeon’s eyes during the procedure.

The fellowship training associated with our various divisions include the management of cancer in those respective fields. Oncologic Surgery in WSG involves the treatment of cancers not usually associated with a specific organ system, such as melanoma and soft tissue tumors such as sarcomas.

Curtis received a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology/Athletic Training from California State University, Long Beach and worked as an athletic trainer for eight years. In 2005, Curtis completed his physician assistant training at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle and earned a Bachelor of Clinical Health Sciences Degree. That same year, he passed the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam. Curtis worked at the Reno Orthopedic Clinic from 2005 â€“ 2007, providing care for patients with sports injuries, arthritis, and fractures. In April of 2007, Curtis joined Western Bariatric Institute and provides care for patients in our clinic 1 â€“ 2 days per week. He also assists with surgery and hospital care 3 â€“ 4 days per week. In addition, Curtis will be developing and implementing a pre- and post-operative fitness and exercise program for our patients.
