- The Marine Science Institute is a nonprofit organization that offers hands-on science and environmental education programs to students of all ages throughout Northern California. Founded in 1970, the institute serves more than 38,000 students every year. It emphasizes the interdependence of all living things, their connection to the physical environment and the special responsibilities of humans to the environment. The Marine Science Institute facilitates active learning through the use of observation, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The institute offers the Discovery Voyage program for students in grade four and above. It also provides the Inland Voyages program for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Located in Redwood City, Calif., the Marine Science Institute receives donations from individuals, businesses and foundations.
