Kitchen Remodeling
The owners of this small craftsman style home, built in the 1920s in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, were desperate for a master bath. The original home did not have an upstairs, so what was once part of the attic became the new master bath. The new bathroom retained the historic charm and character of the home, while utilizing updated finishes, fixtures and design details. Beadboard wainscoting and varying lengths and widths of salvaged hardwood on the floor set the mood for the bath. A clawfoot tub, polished nickel fixtures and a vanity, set with a Carrera marble countertop, complete the period appropriate look.

The kitchen in this ranch style home was dark and cramped. At first glance, several cosmetic issues were obvious: the wallpaper badly dated the room, the dark cabinetry and wainscoting seemed to suck the light out and the two windows were ugly and leaky. Removing the soffit ceiling and fluorescent lighting, installing new cherry cabinetry and granite countertop, and changing the flooring to tile was some of what it took to take this kitchen from simple to spectacular!

The mission for this project was to transform a large empty yard into a functional – and beautiful – terrace for entertaining. The owners had a list of “must-haves:” flooring that was sturdy, but couldn’t be “dug” up by their dogs; several areas that worked together, but could be used more intimately with smaller groups; and, finally, indestructibility. With the new access through the old living room fireplace, the new 100+ sq.ft. terrace is a conservatory-like space that has three distinct entertaining areas, anchored by a custom gas fire pit and covered by a massive, beautiful clear cedar trellis.

This project began with a modest goal: to add a garage to an unassuming 1800 square foot home. The existing house was 1 1/2 stories with three foot knee walls in most of the upstairs rooms, including the master bedroom. The result was a stunning whole house remodel transforming the house to a Northwest Craftsman original. The existing family room became the garage, a new family room addition was constructed on the rear of the house, off the kitchen, and a small bump out addition extended the bedroom downstairs.

The transformation to craftsman was dramatic. An 8’ x 12’ covered porch was added to the front of the home, supported by tapered columns. To economize, Cultured Chardonnay Fieldstone was chosen for the front facade of the porch and the chimney, in lieu of using real stone. A new roof of architectural composition materials was applied. A new front door, with craftsman lights and detail molding, replaced the previous door and flat paneled garage doors were installed. Cedar shake siding was used for the top part of the exterior, with horizontal siding below. New vinyl Milgard gridded windows, framed with white trim, completed the look.

The new addition beautifully complements the home. On the exterior, the brick façade continues around the addition and new windows, siding and trim mirror the existing house. Inside, boxed ceiling beams were added and the fireplace was moved to the east wall. Custom painted cabinetry frame a new gas fireplace finished with art-deco tile. The southwest corner of the room has a new window seat and a casual seating area. The new butler’s pantry has custom cabinetry as well, in a dark cherry finish that sets off the refinished floors. The entry’s balusters were removed, creating a more graceful transition and a small landing now defines and separates the living room from the kitchen. We encountered a fair share of challenges, not the least of which was trying to put plumb finishes on a home that had settled substantially in its 100 year lifespan.
