Founded in 1971, the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources is responsible for the preservation and protection of history and culture of North Carolina. The department works for economic and social well being in the states. It operates through various divisions, including archives, history, arts and libraries. The department s archive division preserves and maintains a record of cultural heritage through the preservation and interpretation of documents, artifacts and buildings. Its history division maintains more than 25 state-owned historic properties, including governors birthplaces, battlegrounds, farms and battleships. The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources arts and libraries divisions provide art, educational and cultural programs.
