Preventive Care

Dental Care
Dental care is an essential part of your pet’s overall health. When oral hygiene is neglected, pets can develop dental disease which negatively affects other systems in the body and may lead to tooth loss.
Vaccination
We are seeing these signs in fully vaccinated pets. Our affiliated kennel, Armadale Farm Kennel, has been proactive in requiring both Bordetella (kennel cough) and Canine Influenza vaccination for boarding, daycare, and grooming pets to try to help protect our patients from these highly contagious upper respiratory illnesses. We are still seeing some pets with these vaccines becoming ill, and more surprising is that many of the dogs with illness have been young adult dogs. Airway testing in these pets have almost always come back negative, indicating that these vaccines seem protective and suggesting another infection is causing the symptoms.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Exams allow our veterinarians to detect problems and diseases that might go undiscovered otherwise, including heart murmurs, tumors, enlarged organs, cataracts, ear infections, ear mites, dental disease, skin issues and allergies.
Behavioral Counseling
During your pet's behavior consultation, we will review your pet's history, provide a physical evaluation and diagnosis, and work with you to develop a treatment plan.

I do wish they had more knowledge about nutrition or had a specialist on staff (at least part time). I was told Science Diet was the best food but after doing a lot of research and talking with a lot of people, we're using totally different food and probably wouldn't use Science Diet unless it was an emergency. When I asked the docs about food, they really couldn't speak in depth about it so I've had to rely on others. I had a similar situation with herbal supplements for our husky mix's pain management. The docs had never heard of the supplement and pretty much said, after looking at the ingredient list, that it "should be ok."

(3) The docs are pretty conservative. Our husky mix was diagnosed with hip dysplasia when he was a puppy and rather than push us toward expensive treatments and surgery, they took a wait and see approach. We really appreciated that Dr. Bonifant, especially, took great care to calm me down as I was quite worried about our gimpy puppy. He's been doing just fine since his diagnosis and we haven't needed to pursue treatment yet.

X-Ray
You may be asked to wait in your car with your pet or drive your pet to the rear of the hospital which has a direct walkway to the x-ray room if chest x-rays are needed. Our staff may be in protective clothing (gowns, masks, gloves) to minimize transmission by our staff to other pets. Do not allow your pet to have any contact with other pets or pet parents in the parking lot. If your pet needs a potty break then walk them far away from other animals.
