Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Northeast Orthotics and Prosthetics carries a vast array of upper extremity and hand splints including orthoses designed for finger contractures or severed tendons of the wrist and hand, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, stroke, trauma and orthoses to support the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand before or after surgery. Orthoses can be soft, semi rigid or hard depending on the condition being treated.
Multiple Sclerosis
A Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (KAFO) is designed to support the entire leg and provide stability in the knee, ankle and foot by maintaining proper alignment and controlling motion about the joint. The instability treated can be caused by muscle weakness, paralysis, or by many diagnoses including lower extremity paralysis, muscle weakness, post-polio syndrome, broken bones, arthritic joints or knee hyper extension. Hemiplegics, paraplegics, later stages of multiple sclerosis, post polio syndrome are some of the etiologies requiring this level of bracing. Today's technology uses simple physics, electronic sensors under the foot, and weight shifting of the body over the extremity to automatically and safely lock the knee during weight bearing and unlocking the knee during unweighted swing. This reduces the energy spent in the effort to walk on a level surface in a reciprocal fashion.

Prior to joining Northeast O&P, Thomas was the Director of Clinical Services at Chicago’s Ballert Orthopedics, where he practiced for 29 years. During his time with Ballert, Thomas was responsible for the development of custom molded Cervical-Thoracic Orthoses (CTO), Ballert’s Cranial Molding Orthosis and developed two patented Ankle-Foot Orthoses designs for ankle inversion injuries. Thomas’ substantial experience also includes serving as a residency director for the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) for 15 years.

Lesions
This level of bracing is seen for individuals who have minimal or no function of their extremities. Some patients with paraplegia, spina bifida, and other spinal cord lesions require hip joints and pelvic band fitted around one's hips to provide stability. There is technology available in the form of reciprocating mechanisms that push one limb forward while pulling the other back, which makes walking with crutches or a walker easier for the individual.
