- One of the primary ways to fight tooth decay that develops on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, premolars, and molars are dental sealants. While regular brushing and flossing help remove food particles and bacteria from the smooth surfaces of the tooth enamel, it's difficult to keep the depressions and grooves clean. Because toothbrush bristles can't reach into these areas plaque, bacteria and tiny particles of food are often left behind causing decay. A dental sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth acting as a barrier to protect the enamel. After your teeth have been properly cleaned, the dental hygienist "paints" the sealant onto each tooth surface where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. Sealants, which hold up well under the force of everyday chewing can last several years before a reapplication is needed. It's important to see your dentist regularly, however, to make sure that the sealants stay intact. While children and teenagers are obvious candidates for sealants, adults can benefit as well.
