Platte Valley Baptist Church

As a resident in Platte City, this church has left quite a sour taste in my mouth. Although people are allowed to share their beliefs with others, I have been appalled by the messages that they are giving to other people. In my place of work, I have already recieve three different booklets, all contain the same message. The message is if you don't realize that you are a sinner (and you have surely done "something" in your life that makes you one) and if you don't embrace this religion then you are going to hell. The fact that someone handed one of these booklets to me, told me that I would enjoy it, and then discovering that the booklet was telling me that I was going to hell gave me a good laugh. I dismissed it until I saw the second booklet which was a comic strip. This one in particular really got to me since it's intended audience is for children. Not only is the art of the comic identical to newspaper comic strips, it also has a child that the narrator has chosen to be the victim. The first message that this comic gives you is that if you are a child from a family that conceived you out of wedlock then you are going to hell. That's what really irritated me the most, and it's one of the main reasons why I decided to write this review. If a child were to pick up this booklet and read it, what do you think they would feel? How many children do you know that have single parents? If I were a child, I would be scared out of my mind. In the comic, the sinners are also portrayed to be "low class", ignorant people. They have tattoos and are drawn in a way that makes them appear rude and mean. I'm still not surprised by this though. These scare tactics to convert others to this religion are dim witted and aimed to take advantage of the uncertainties and fears that children and other people may feel. How inviting is that? Why do you think that would make someone want to support you? Honestly, I have been to a handful of churches in my life, but these booklets have insured that I will never step through those doors, and I will encourage others to do the same. Church is supposed to be a welcoming, safe place for people to worship. This church has already set themselves up for failure. Word of advice: stop handing out your booklets. No one likes being told they are going to hell. Adults may be harder to win over, but aiming at children and using these dead tactics to control them is way beyond messed up. Try spreading some positivity. Although these booklets have been handed out to me at work, I will refuse to accept anymore of them, and all of the ones that I come across will go straight into the trash.
